"How long have you been doing this? How many times have you bet money you didn't have?"

"Not many times," I admitted. "But at least about twenty."

"Twenty doesn't seem like a few to you?" My mother squinted her eyes. They almost popped out. It was a characteristic she had always had.

"And when I had money, I bet many more times, but that wasn't a problem," I added.

"Have you ever lost a race?"

I shook my head, proud of that.

"No. I've never lost a race," I replied.

"So, if your plan with that girl doesn't work, then the other plan will be to race this Saturday."...
