Chapter 5 My Friend

Chapter 5 My Friend

Nancy

After all, I ended up accepting that Kyle was right not to fight him over the race, and, stopped caring about myself the moment he ended. Sure, I was surprised by what happened, but my friend had to get over it. Why? Because luckily he didn't need the money from the competition since he practically slept with bills in his bed every night. And also because it seemed absurd to me to continue making this so big and serious. He had to say that he wanted to break the face of that other racer who had only competed cleanly and successfully in his car, not only because he was ridiculous with everyone who saw him throw a tantrum after the competition, but also because it left him immature. His ego was too big that it sometimes clouded his judgment and made him act, anyway. I could hear him, but he could no longer ask me to put him in his place. Yes, I know it must be a painful thing to see you beat in a race when you've never lost one before, but it was all over as soon as Jake crossed the line and he should have stayed there.

Kyle calmed down for a while but then came back to complain about the same thing. However, I cut him off immediately and asked him to relax.

"Well, I'll calm down. But I assure you that next race I will beat that idiot," he warned, taking the last puff on his cigar and throwing it to the ground, and then stepping on it and extinguishing it.

"Kyle, let's get your car, so we're going home and leaving this place for today," I proposed.

"Yes. I'll go, wait for me here.”

I got up from his lap for him to get out of the car.

"No, I'm going with you," I said when I got out of bed. I accompany you.

Kyle didn't complain and took me by the hand so we could start walking to the track again. As we approached, people applauded Kyle, even though he had lost. Everyone there had enormous respect for him because he was a great runner and was always nice to all of them. They cheered him, shouted his name, and kept applauding him. I guess that was going to boost Kyle's mood a little tonight, but not enough. Judging by his face and his smile he liked this, but he was not satisfied. Today hadn't been a good day for his concept car.

"You've been great, Kyle! A pink-haired girl said, looking at him excitedly. I know she was in love with Kyle ever since we started coming to the races."

My eyes subtly searched for the winner of the night. The only man who was able so far to beat one of the best illegal racers in town. I couldn't find it, so I stopped looking, also so that my friend wouldn't notice it. I was looking for it because I was very curious and it somewhat surprised me by tonight.

I stood in a corner, waiting for Kyle to get his car. I watched people carefully, noticing how they looked at my best friend as if he were a hero. He was not a hero, but the people there admired his talent. I even heard many times that they insinuated he should find a way in careers, in true legal competitions, but Kyle always went beyond that. He didn't understand how he could like people's attention so much, and not want to race professionally. I was also sure that he could be a great discovery.

"Alone here?" someone spoke behind my back, startling me a little.

I turned around to see who it was and met the guy I was looking for. I met Jake.

"Do you see anyone else next to you?" I asked, staring at him.

He smiled.

"Wow, and I thought you were nicer.”

"I'm very nice."

"But it doesn't seem like it with me. Is it because I have defeated your little boyfriend" raised his eyebrows, amused, smoking a cigarette. He was so serious but with such an air of superiority.

"He's not my boyfriend," I clarified.

"So? Your lover?”

"He's my best friend.”

"Does he know?"

I grimaced.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"Nothing. I'm just talking to you," he replied. “Why has he taken you by the hand if he is not your boyfriend?” He took a puff of the cigarette.

"What?"

"I've seen them holding hands a while ago."

Laughed.

"Don't you know that today's friends can hold hands without having to be boyfriends?"

"I don't know. I don't have any friends so do that with me," she replied.

"I guess it's because you don't have a friend you're close enough to do for that.”

"Yes, maybe, but does he know he's not your friend?"

"Where do you want to go? She knows I'm just a friend. It's stupid what you ask.”

"Are you sure? Because I'm pretty sure he likes you. I've been watching them. And I know how he looks at you.”

I laughed again.

"Oh, and you discovered all that by watching us for just a few seconds? It's the first time you've seen us.”

"You don't have to know them to know.”

"As you say.”

There was a time when I felt like Kyle was confused with me, but that feeling didn't last long and I gave up on that idea. Honestly, I don't know what this guy was trying to talk to me. I wasn't liking myself. I found it annoying.

I noticed Kyle parked the car in front of us. I knew it was best to stop talking well to that guy before my friend got out of the car and said something to him. Today Kyle wasn't very right in his mind.

"I'm leaving," I replied.

He smiled at me.

"Of course, go with your boyfriend who is waiting for you.”

I rolled my eyes.

How annoying it was.

"Hey, you haven't told me your name yet!" he told me, waiting for an answer.

But, for the second time, I ignored him again.
