"I don't understand... how have you been able to do such a thing to me? And me... that I helped you so much...”
I looked at him indignantly, unable to believe the paper I was reading. But because of Jake's scared reaction... Everything was exposed.
My two-year marriage was a complete lie all this time. How could he overcome that? How would I go to sleep tonight in my bed, knowing that the man I loved with all my soul, with whom I had made love so many times, married me for my money?
I held the paper with my trembling hands, reading again the content in which I saw how my marriage was fake. My husband had lied to me all this time. And my father knew all this time, for he was the one who had the idea!
I felt sold.
My chest burned and the memories traveling through my mind appeared one after another with no mercy. Tears would stream down my cheeks and give me a bleak look. I felt humiliated and used to it. I couldn't forgive him. I loved him, but something like that was unforgivable. I would forgive none of them.
Jake's eyes were on mine. I noticed how shiny they got, but how hard it was to believe him now. Whenever I saw him cry, my world would fall apart, but today those tears could have no other effect on me than repudiation. Well... was that really what I felt or was that what I wanted to feel? I knew the answer immediately: I should feel repudiated so as not to think about that enormous desire to hug him. I had to be strong and very proud.
Jake disrespected me.
"I beg you to let me explain everything," he left the wine glasses in the cabinet next to him and approached me.
"I don't want you around! Stay away from me!” I yelled at him. It was a charged cry. But not loaded with anger, but loaded with disappointment and pain.
He didn't listen to me, so I was the one who backed down. But the wall was behind me, so I just ended up bumping into it. At this moment, everything made me very embarrassed. The fact of thinking that I confessed to him my deepest secrets, my thoughts, my desires, and that I gave him everything, I fought for him, for us, and then learned that we both lived in a lie of love, was very painful. I was always a tough person; I didn't easily fall into people's charms, and I was always very careful about everything, but with Jake, I dropped that veil of self-defense that I always put on when talking to people. I allowed myself to be weak and let me like him, and when I least realized, I was already more than in love with him and my heart loved him. And all for what? For this?
"After all... is this who I am to you? A contract? A chance for you and your family to become millionaires again? Is this how you see me? How a stupid opportunity?!”
"Calm down, please. Let me explain it all... I never wanted to do this to you, or anyone. Things only emerged and...”
"No! No excuses, Jake! There are no excuses or anything you can tell me to remedy this! What good are your words now? Everything has gone to the trash” I pushed him away because he took advantage of the fact that they cornered me to continue approaching me.
I saw more tears in his eyes as if it hurt, but I couldn't eat that tear tale too. I had to be strong and not get carried away by it.
"I know you don't believe me now, but...”
"Of course, I don't believe you anymore! I can't believe someone who has been lying all this time. My life is practically a lie! I... I should have stayed with Kyle... He was sincere and warned me you would hurt me!”
Now my friend Kyle's words echoed strongly in my head. I always thought he told me from the pain because I didn't choose him and I stayed with Jake, but now I realized that Kyle himself could always know the truth of everything. The thing is, if he knew about this, he didn't open his mouth either. If so, the truth is they were both very imbeciles.
I pushed him again and took advantage of the space between us to surround him and move away, so I could no longer be cornered. I couldn't see it anymore. I needed to get out of this room right now.
And worst of all... The baby on the way was going to suffer the consequences of this false love. His father's false love for his mother. And so Jake thought he could raise a child? Do I feel like a liar? Practically a scammer.
I hated it. I swear I hated it.
"I want a divorce, you're warned, so find a lawyer," I let him know.
I hated the idea of having to get a divorce. I know not all marriages work, but I always wished that when I got married, it would be forever, for life. It was hard to see how what I always wanted would fall apart in a matter of seconds, but this armed marriage had to end right now. I would sue my father and my Jake for all this. He wanted justice.
My father and Jake had to pay. The two people he loved most in this world, hurt the wrong person.
"I don't want to divorce you, I love you.”
I laughed with no grace.
"How low have you fallen, idiot?”
"I love you, I swear. Please let's talk!”
Jake took me by the hand to turn me around, but I slipped away, more annoyed than before.
"Don't touch me!”
"Please...” His look was still just as sad. But I repeated to myself that I could not let myself be overcome by that look.
With a look of disappointment and anger, I looked straight into his eyes. The paper in my hands was the contract, and the pushes I gave him when I wanted to separate him from me seconds ago wrinkled it. And it was the vivid memory of the farce she had as a husband. And the test with which he would raise a millionaire's demand.
"Tell me something, Jake... And I hope you are sincere once in your life... Did you come to love me?”
He looked me in the eye with the same expression. He didn't answer me.
"Tell me!” I demanded.
“Now I love you...”
That ended up breaking me.
“But at first, you felt nothing," I deduced.
His silence was an answer for me.
