I watched as Rebecca sat across from Max with a questioning gaze.

I'd been hiding at a distance just now, watching her and Max talk.

I'd heard her and Max talking, and I'd gotten Max to agree to whatever excessive demands she'd made.

And all those things that Max said at the beginning, when she saw that the person who came to talk to her about business was Max and began to leave, were also things that I had taught Max to say through the headset.
