The message arrived in the late afternoon.

A young maid I did not know well handed me a folded note while I was walking back from the eastern garden. She said one of the border runners had delivered it and that it was marked urgent. I thanked her and opened it as soon as she left.

The handwriting was unfamiliar, but the content made my stomach tighten.
