Waking up in your castle, chained to a name that was never mine, marked by a man I was told would kill me before the sun rose again.

For a long moment after I finished telling him, Christian said nothing at all. He just stood there, quiet, his eyes fixed somewhere past me like he was still turning the whole story over in his mind.

I turned to look at him fully, waiting, unsure what silence like that was supposed to mean. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No,” he said. “You didn’t.”
