I felt the wrongness before anyone told me.

It started as a sharp pull through the bond, sudden and uneven, like something had been cut partway through. I was still in the council chamber when it hit. One moment I was listening to an elder speak about grain stores. The next, my head turned toward the door as if Jennifer had called my name from far away.

The bond did not go silent. It went strained and distant.
