Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Upon entering, he found his mother watching TV. She tried to go unnoticed, but her mother called out to her forcing her to sit on the couch next to her. Her mother assessed her face biting her lip just like her daughter does. A mania, no doubt, she had inherited from her mother.

"I want to talk," she said raising an eyebrow.

- About? – Lucia asked arching both eyebrows.

- You and Mayara's son.

- What have?

- Anything. I've just been watching you. I want to know if everything is ok.

-I don't know mom - she replied.

- Like this?

- I really don't know how to decipher what I feel at the moment. I don't know what's going on between us.

- So I got it right.

- I think so. But is complicated.

- I understand my beautiful - caressed her daughter's hair. – When I was 17 I met your father. At first my family didn't accept it because I was too young to get married. But I was already pregnant with you. It was the greatest happiness and confusion too. I couldn't even imagine what it was like to be a mother, let alone have another life inside me. If it was complicated for me, imagine the two of you.

- Why do you think it's more complicated for us than it was for you and Dad?

- It's not really complicated. And worse.

- Worst.

- Yea. You are almost the same age, as much as you think the same way and have your youthful dreams...

- What do you mean mother?

- That if you don't take care of yourselves, you know...

- What?

- They may end up or rather you may end up like me.

- Mother? Wait, do you think Marcos and I are like...

- Oh... Aren't they?

- No.

- Oh dear I... Sorry.

- Can I go upstairs now?

- Yea.

She kissed her mother on the cheek and ran upstairs. She didn't expect her mother to think she and her childhood friend had a more intimate relationship. But deep down, she didn't even know what was happening to her feelings. She closed the bedroom door with a sigh and threw herself on the bed. She stared at the ceiling decorated with neon stars where she had written "MY DREAM" and a drawing of a ballerina. She thought of her father and how lucky Marcos had been to have been so close to him in the city that she most wanted to fulfill her dream. She reached out to open the drawer and take out her beloved diary. She turned on the mp3 to her favorite singer and started writing.

R...

Oh, oh, Rapunzel! What do I do? I had the most unexpected conversation with my mother. And with that photo and the prickly man locking me in his room, it was the last straw for my mother to immediately realize that something was going on between us. Worse that she thought we were having sex?

Daring, daring... Oh, how angry.

Why do I always fall for him, tell me? It's like he has a magnet that always takes me back to his hands. Every time he touches me, a magnetism happens to curl my whole body, and it's impossible to escape it. He has the absurd ability to capture me and hold me in his thorn clutches.

Am I in love with Rapunzel? It will be...

She closed the journal and clutched it to her chest, gazing at the starry ceiling again. She turned on the laptop on the bed and opened the Fighterboy website feed.

"With you, another one from the thorn fist hurricane" she read.

-Oh God! - She grumbled clicking on the video. – Oh, how did he have the courage to do that? And how can a guy be popular for that? Absurd. I have yet to find out where this club is. Maybe I can make him stop, it could end badly for him – she commented to herself. She spent a few hours watching other fight videos, until she hit sleep and fell asleep.

Marcos couldn't resist and entered through Lucia's bedroom window. He locked the door just in case. He tidied up her laptop and opened her journal. He was impressed by what he read. He dropped the diary. He covered her with the blanket and stroked her hair. She smelled him.

-You don't know how crazy I am to hold you, my Lucia - he said softly. - But I can't yet, I promised your father I would take care of you for him here and I will. He left the room and went down the tree to the house.

His mother Mayara surprised him by opening the door. He widened his eyes in fear.

- Mother? What you doing?

- I'm the one asking dear, what are you doing invading other people's rooms, what are these ways?

- I'm not invading anyone's room, you must be sleeping Mrs. Maya.

- Don't talk to me like that, I know you boy - she locked the door and made him sit on the couch to start a conversation that Marcos was not even a little keen to have, after being caught coming from Lucia's house.

- I don't feel like talking mom.

- Oh, but I'm comrade.

- Wow, what manners are these Dona Mayara?

- See, I still have a way with boys your age. Stay there and tell me what's going on.

- Having with what? As far as I know, nothing is happening.

- You don't fool me boy, tell me soon. You lock Clarice's daughter in her room and then like a cat in boots invades the girl's room and says in a straight face that there's nothing going on? She looked at him waiting for an answer.

-But that's it, nothing's going on - she shrugged, opening her arms to the sides.

- Look, I really like my friend and her daughter, who by the way is a beautiful girl, like she rocks blocks. I don't want you giving one of don Juan with the girl and then make her cry.

- Mom, I'm not doing anything. We're just friends and we're serving a punishment that the school principal gave.

- And this punishment includes all this?

- No. It's just that I really don't know. It's different to see my childhood friend like this. This confuses me a lot.

- I know my dear. But if there is something deeper between you, I ask you to be careful. A woman's heart is a minefield of weaknesses. I'm not against you and her being lovers.

- Lovers? Where did you get that?” She got up and headed towards the kitchen. - And even if something happens, I won't be a scoundrel like that deputy who let you down. I will do it right. Good night Mrs. Maya – so she went inside and locked herself in her room.

Mayara felt her heart sink when her son mentioned his father. She was the only man she had truly given herself to, then only dedicated herself to taking care of her son. At the time when she met him, her mother Zilda worked as a cook at Ricardo Donavan's parents' house. The two lived on land that Ricardo's parents had given them so they could be close to work. Mayara had started working as a cleaning lady in the house to help her mother and sometimes replaced her when she was off or sick. The two soon became friends, but Mayara knew where she belonged. However, the boy wanted to invest more. His parents would never accept their son marrying the maid's daughter. Ricardo had done everything to conquer Mayara and he had achieved it at great cost. She had fought hard to avoid him, when she saw he was already in his arms, dawning on a bed beside her. He'd been a huge cheater, after convincing her to go to a party at a friend's house. He doped her with drinks and took her to the bedroom until he got what she wanted.

"Now my parents won't stop me from marrying you beautiful, until nine months have passed" she remembered what he'd said when he woke up with a migraine. He purposely got her pregnant to convince her parents to let him free with her choice. But it was all in vain even after the two were engaged, the baby was born and they lived together for a while. Ricardo himself had convinced himself that what he had done was inconsequential and immature and had even believed that he had never really loved her. That it was just a rebellion to oppose his parents' authority over him, over his future. He had separated from Mayara with Marcos when he was still small. He had gone back to law school and made amends with his parents. Mayara, in turn, had lost the opportunity to carry out her studies, to live her adolescence full of dreams and goals. The only good thing about it all was her son, whom she loved more than anything. For a while she didn't want Ricardo's help to support her son. She took some courses and made her way by working as a cleaning lady. Her mother, Zilda, had received all her benefits after she was fired and wrongfully accused of blowing her belly. Ricardo practically forced her to accept help. He bought her a house when she found out that she had come to live in Curitiba with her mother. She sold the house and bought another one, but in another neighborhood, which Ricardo doesn't know about until now. With the pension he proposed to give every month, Mayara had traveled to the United States and lived there working in the luxury hotel and had let her brother Gilberto take Marcos to Thailand to study martial arts. But after he was diagnosed with the disease, everything had changed.
