Maria is currently in the hospital, and when she awakened, her body hurt, most likely as a result of the force with which she plunged into the river.

She groaned as she moved her body and then remembered that Arthur had saved her from drowning; she closed her eyes firmly because of her clumsiness and the fact that she had fallen there without jumping.

Arthur may believe she's suicidal because she overheard him ask, "Are you trying to kill yourself, Maria?"
