When I opened my eyes, the bed beside me was empty. The sheets were still warm, but she was gone.

I stretched, running a hand down my face. She must've gone to the training grounds. That woman wouldn’t take a break if the moon itself fell out of the sky.

I pulled on a robe and headed for the council chamber. I had a meeting this morning with the Elders and my Beta. Plans that needed finalising. Or at the very least, arguments to be had.

When I stepped into the meeting room, all four of them were already seated. The three Elders sat in their usual spots...
