Selene's POV

The sound went on longer than a scream should.

It did not come from a throat. It came from the air. It came from the black ice and the ruined stones and the silver ribbon on the ground. It came from everywhere at once and then it stopped.

The woman in the cairn was still standing.

She was not smiling anymore.

Her face had not changed. She still had my hair and my eyes and my scars. But the way she held herself was different. Her shoulders were wrong. Her hands were wrong. She was standing the way a puppet stands when the strings have gone slack.
