I look at myself critically in the mirror in my dressing room. White Chucks, shorts, a white top, and my blonde hair tied back in a ponytail. I've only put on subtle make-up so as not to attract too much attention. Not because I'm otherwise too pretty - no, I'm not that arrogant - but because of my hair. My hair attracts attention, or rather the white streaks in my hair. It comes from my wolf - his fur is white and that somehow comes through in my hair. It's the same with Noah - his wolf has brown fur, just like his hair. I'm the only one in our family with blonde hair - everyone else has brown or black hair. I love my hair because no one else has such special hair, but most people look at me strangely or even think I have a pigment disorder.
"Liv, are you coming?" Noah's voice rings out from downstairs, I quickly put on a few more sprays of perfume and grab my bag. In a good mood, I hop down the stairs and into the kitchen, where my mother is pouring me a glass of orange juice and my brother is devouring his toast. Before he can take his second one, I grab it and take a bite.
"Hey, that's my toast!"
I give him a sweet smile and reach for my glass, "I was just quicker." He shakes his head and takes a new one while I eat his with relish. It only has butter on it but it tastes best that way anyway. "Olivia, honey, don't you think that's a bit too much perfume? Do you want to poison your classmates on the first day?" I wash down the bite of toast with orange juice before answering, "that bad?" She wrinkles her nose a little and walks to the door, "if your brother, who is also covered in perfume, wasn't in the room, I'm sure not."
Noah and I look at each other and burst out laughing. "At least that way they won't smell us, even if it will be difficult for our noses to recognize them." That's right, I hadn't thought of that detail. How would we recognize them now? Noah will somehow manage it, I think, and continue eating my breakfast. I'm a total breakfast person, the more and more extravagant the better. "Come on Wolfmen, if you eat more you won't fit in my car."
Noah pokes me in the side, grinning, and I slide off my chair, squealing. "I'll give you Wolfmen right now." I let that slight tingling sensation in my head start, the sign that my eyes are turning a light white tone. This actually only happens when you transform, but I can do it just like that. The funny thing is that Noah is never sure whether I'm transforming or not. Strangely, his eyes stay the same as they are when I'm human. Another thing that makes me very different from him. "If you transform now, not only will I kick your ass, but also the pack whose territory we're in."
His face shows that he doesn't find it as funny as I do, but I still giggle, "Calm down. I was only kidding." The tingling starts again and my eyes are back to normal. Even though I was good, he still hits me on the back of the head. "Ouch," I complain, laughing.
"Come on now," Noah also laughs, reaches for his backpack and grabs the keys to his Golf from the table. With my last bite of toast, I hurry after him and flop down in his car outside, now I'm a little nervous. The drive to school only takes about fifteen minutes by car, but it still feels like an eternity. As we turn into the school parking lot, I realize that God hasn't answered my prayer. It seems as if the whole school is standing in the parking lot, sure, the weather is great, but why today?
Noah finds a parking space near the entrance, at least something positive. A few of the young people stare at the Golf as if it were a car of the future, but it's just been pimped up a bit. The other cars either look very expensive or as if they've just been picked up from the scrapyard, but there was no car with a few extras to be seen anywhere. I'm a girl but I still know a lot about cars, maybe that's because I mostly played with my brother and had to help him with his cars. "It'll be fine Liv, just think it's a different school in England. We'll manage it and I'll come to you during recess."
I nod, a little panicked, and I'm already dreading getting out. Everyone is probably staring at us. "Liv, come on, I'll stay with you until you get to your classroom." I smile at him gratefully, but the smile is a little weak. He squeezes my hand briefly before he gets out. "Okay, Olivia, you can do it," I try to calm myself down and take another deep breath. My fingers open the door and I swing my legs out into the warm June air. My heart rate increases as I stand up. Without looking up, I close the car door. I feel the others staring at me as I rush to Noah and dig my fingers into his arm. "Are you staring at my hair a lot?"
He bursts out laughing, "You're beautiful and you think they're staring at you because of your hair?"
I look around uncertainly, a few girls are staring at my brother, no wonder he's really very handsome with his brown hair and brown eyes. But many eyes are on me too, especially one pair of eyes.
A boy is leaning against a black SUV surrounded by a group of well-built boys, a girl is leaning against him but his eyes are on me.
His hair is black and I can feel his authority and presence even from here, his body is muscular and tanned, but he's too far away to see the color of his eyes. His hands are buried in his pockets and the girl looks like she wants to kill me.
I look away and go with Noah into the school building, where I get my timetable and the code for my locker.
Noah takes me to my first class and pulls me into a hug, "Have fun in English, see you at recess." I try to put on a believable smile, which disappears as soon as I turn around.
The classroom is already pretty full and the teacher at the desk immediately comes over to me with a big grin, she must have smoked something beforehand, because I would never smile like that if I had to teach a bunch of teenagers.
"You must be Olivia, welcome, I'm Mrs. Tremp." Her voice is pleasant and she seems to be quite nice, but usually these teachers are the strictest, well, that was the case in London anyway. I just nod and grasp the strap of my bag. "Why don't you sit next to Megan, she can show you what we've done so far."
I look to where she is pointing and see a girl with long brown hair, she waves at me and smiles. Some of my tension falls away and this time my smile is genuine as I walk towards her. "Hi, I'm Olivia," I say and drop my bag next to the table.
She beams and pulls me into a hug, "and I'm Megan." We sit down and she immediately turns her chair so she can look at me, "your hair looks amazing! How do you get it like that?" I smile and am filled with happiness, this is the first time someone has thought that the highlights are intentional. "Oh...thanks, I've had them since I was little."
She looks at me in surprise, okay, maybe a little too much of the truth, but I don't want to get to know a potential friend through lies. Two more girls storm into the room and drop into the seats in front of us.
"Guys, this is Olivia, she's new here and will be with us from today," she introduces me and smiles at me. They both look very friendly and smile at me too, the black-haired one introduces herself as Kate and the blonde one as Lola.
"So Olivia, how does one end up moving from England to Ireland in the middle of the year?" Lola leans over my table with interest and the others also look at me expectantly, "please call me Liv and well, my father got a great job offer, the classic."
They continue to question me until the bell rings and my attention is diverted by a boy, the boy who was staring at me in the parking lot. And now he's in my class, great.
He seems to notice me too and stops, dumbfounded, but he immediately catches himself and goes to his seat at the back. For the entire hour I try to follow Mrs. Tremp, who is talking about spelling, and giggle with Megan, who keeps cracking jokes.
Finally the bell rings for break and I follow Megan outside, "come on Liv, we'll show you the cafeteria."
In the middle of the three girls I walk with them to the cafeteria, I try to ignore the looks of the other students, Kate seems to notice this and looks at me with pity.
"Being the new one is always shit, but don't let them intimidate you." I smile at them gratefully, the answer I give most often today. The babble of voices gets louder and louder as we walk to a large red door with large glass windows and open it.
We are immediately swallowed up by the voices and I see hundreds of students sitting at large tables, each with something to eat or another person in front of them. My eyes fall on Noah, who has of course found his way back to the group, and I signal the girls to follow me.
A smile appears on Noah's face as his eyes meet mine and my entourage, "See, I told you it wouldn't be bad." He hugs me and greets my friends, Megan blushes slightly as she shakes his hand and I sense a matchmaking.
"Girls, this is my brother Noah," I introduce him and he does the same to us with the two boys at our table who turn out to be Dave and Pet. I'm not really hungry because I'm so excited, so I just help myself to Noah while the others get something to eat.
I'm just laughing at Megan again when the door to the cafeteria swings open and the boy with black hair appears, next to him a boy who is just as handsome as him.
They look like twins, but their hair and facial features are different, the other boy has dark brown, almost black hair and he doesn't look as dominant and intimidating.
"If you want to know their names, they're Kyle and Jace McLoid, the hottest guys in school and absolute bad boys. So keep your hands off, sister," Megan explains when she notices my look.
Bad boys are the least of my problems right now, because when I notice Noah's look I know that I'm not the only one who smells it.
The two of them are werewolves, just like the boys they sit with, I can smell it all over the cafeteria, because they don't even try to cover up their smell. We've found our pack.
