I clutch my books to my chest as I walk through the halls to get to my locker, there are quite a few and they threaten to fall down at any moment. How come I didn't smell Jace's wolf when he came into the classroom, but in the cafeteria among a hundred other students?
It must have been the pack. Another thing I have to stifle my laughter about, we're hiding from a pack of teenagers! I still can't believe I'm not allowed to transform because of a few pubescent boys.
Shaking my head, I walk to my locker and try to wrap my left arm around the books so that I can release my right arm without them falling to the floor in front of me.
It turns out to be quite difficult to open the locker with one hand. I'm sure I look like an idiot, but all the students who walk past me don't even really pay attention to me. "Damn it," I curse quietly as the books almost fall out of my hand.
Why am I only getting my stupid books now? I'm already tempted to hit the locker when a hand closes around the lock and I can use my right hand to protect my books from falling. "Wait, I'll help you," laughs a dark voice next to my ear. I look up in surprise and into two bright green eyes. It's Kyle, the bad boy and brother of Jace.
"Thank you," I manage to say quietly. Pull yourself together, my inner voice snaps at me. Kyle looks at me expectantly, what is he looking at? I thought he wanted to help me, or is he just messing with me?
"Do I have something on my face?" I look at him questioningly. "No, but you would have to give me the code for your lock. Magic isn't my strong point," he laughs and continues to look me in the eyes.
I immediately feel the blood rushing to my cheeks and I'm sure I look like a tomato now, "Oh yeah, right... uh, 5472." He deftly turns the combination into the right order and opens my locker with a light punch. "Apparently there are no lockers with combination locks in England."
"How do you know I'm from England?" I ask as I put my books in the locker. Kyle just shrugs his shoulders, "at school there's nothing you don't know about someone, well almost nothing."
His smile is mysterious. Oh God, he's not referring to my wolf, is he? Did he smell him? I'm actually very good at hiding my scent, but I can smell him more than accurately. His smell is different to Noah's, he smells more like resin, but not unpleasant at all. He doesn't smell like an unwashed dog or anything.
"Aha," I say, trying not to let my uncertainty show. "But I don't know your name," he leans against the locker next to mine and smiles at me with a smile that would surely make thousands of girls melt. "Oh, so people aren't that well informed, are they? Liv." He holds out his hand to me, "Kyle. Is Liv an abbreviation?"
I see a few venomous looks from the girls walking past us before I look at him again, "from Olivia." He smiles again, it looks just adorable and I'm sure he knows it. I take the brief opportunity and look him over. Short dark brown hair that falls a little over his forehead is not long enough to bother him.
It is tousled and gives him a boyish look, his face is pretty and he has beautiful, bright green eyes. His shoulders are broad and his skin is as brown as his brother's, he wears faded jeans and a black t-shirt and really looks more than attractive.
"Nice name, very rare." His words tear me out of my examination and I smile at him and thank him. "What's your next course? Maybe I can accompany you." I look at my plan with delight, but I'm a little irritated by his friendliness. "History and then astronomy."
"Exactly the same as me, then we'll see each other more often now." He beams at me and his words are clearly an attempt at flirting, which I don't respond to. But what's the saying again? Be close to your friends but even closer to your enemies? So I conjure up my best smile, "apparently."
Kyle gestures like a gentleman for me to follow him and I have to giggle, "pretty weird behavior for a bad boy." He looks at me with mock indignation, "Bad boy? Me?" A group of cheerleaders walk past us, they look at me angrily before turning to Kyle, giggling, "hi Kyle!"
"Girls," he says and pulls an invisible hat off his head. I burst out laughing, oh man, that's what he is. He laughs too and looks at me apologetically, "okay, you're right, but I'm a charming bad boy."
I've only known him for ten minutes and I already really like him, but he doesn't have that something about him like his brother that immediately threw me off track.
Kyle puts an arm around my shoulder and pulls me into a classroom that's already pretty full. Megan's eyes almost pop out of her head when she sees me and I wave to her with a smile. It seems to me as if everyone in the room is staring at us, no, it doesn't just seem that way, it's true.
One look in particular burns itself into my skin, Jace is sitting in the back of the room between three boys and is staring at me. No, he is staring at Kyle's arm on my shoulder and his look could surely kill if he was a superhero.
I don't know why, but I immediately shake off Kyle's arm and go to Megan. "Thanks for bringing me here," I say and he smiles.
"I can come with you to astronomy later," he winks at me and then goes to his seat next to Jace. Megan is still staring at me like a three-headed monster.
"You've only been here a day and you already have Kyle's arm on your shoulder! Well, those chicks have a lot to talk about now." I get my pens and notepad out of my bag,
"I don't want anything from him, he was just being nice. Let them talk and be glad that I'm not shutting them up." Megan throws her arms around my neck and presses herself against me, "Heaven sent you!" We immediately burst into loud laughter.
When we calm down a bit, I look around the classroom. There are lots of sculptures and posters of presentations hanging on the walls.
My gaze falls on Jace, who is still staring at me.
How can a person stare for so long? Now I can see his eyes better. They are ice blue and a sharp contrast to his jet black hair. He is wearing a white T-shirt through which you can easily see his muscles.
The sleeves are stretched around his strong arms and I can see a tattoo on his shoulder. It goes up to where his shoulder meets his neck, but I can't see any more than that.
His eyes lock with mine and a strange feeling takes hold of me. His face is serious and shows no emotion or feeling. It looks as if he doesn't even know how to smile.
There's no way I'm going to break eye contact first, my wolf is resisting it. So I stare back just as emotionlessly and a brief expression crosses his face, but it's too brief to call it a smile.
I'm so lost in our staring contest that I'm startled when the same girl who leaned against him this morning falls onto his lap. She looks at me with a raised eyebrow before giving him a kiss on the cheek. His gaze moves away from me and I turn around, ashamed.
A small pang runs through my heart, I don't know why but I just didn't like this scene at all. She's definitely his girlfriend and I'm definitely not going to develop any feelings for a werewolf bad boy asshole.
To get rid of my thoughts, and the image of the fake blonde girl on Jace's lap, I engage Megan in a conversation about the latest episodes of The Bachelor. She distracts me with her enthusiasm for the soap until the teacher comes into the classroom and my thoughts of Jace disappear, or so I think.
