The High Priestess asked to see me alone.

I was in the eastern garden when one of the younger priestesses found me. She bowed politely and said the High Priestess was waiting in the small temple near the north wall. Christian was still in a meeting with Kane and a few of the border captains, so I went without telling him first.

The temple was quiet and cool. The air smelled of herbs and old stone. The High Priestess stood near the low altar with her hands folded in front of her. When she saw me, she gestured to the stone bench beside her.

“Sit, child.”
