Derek’s voice followed me, clinging like smoke. But I kept walking, chin high, heart cold. I remembered the way he sneered, the way he spat out insults about Carlos like they were facts carved in stone.
The things he had said weren’t just offensive; they were unforgivable. Derek had mocked the only man who ever stood up for me. I could never hear any bad words about him.
