When Hazel opened her eyes, she found herself sprawled on a big soft mattress. She rolled and blinked as she looked around the room. It was a big beautiful room.
There was a gorgeously ornate dazzling crystal chandelier above her illuminating the room with its light. The golden sun also seeped into the room giving it a fiery halo.
"Where am I?" The room looked strange to her. Her suitcase was by the creamy-colored big wardrobe on her left. "I don't even need a wardrobe as big as that. What do I own?" She scoffed at the thought of it.
Most of her things had been sold to pay up Brady's debt. The rest, she had given to Avery as a parting gift. There was no money on her.
"Had they landed already? Who brought her to this room?' she wondered. Hazel had slept off for a very long time on the plane.
Hazel took in the room once more. This room could contain her apartment in Miami twice and it would remain some space. "It definitely pays to have money" she noted.
She got up from the bed and moved to the door. Her stomach growled. She had eaten nothing on the plane because she had slept almost all through the journey. The bed on the plane was so soft, that she couldn't resist its temptation.
She opened the door to meet a maid who held a tray in her hands. "Good morning ma'am. Here is your breakfast" she curtsied before her. All these felt strange to her. Being treated like she owned the place was too much.
Did they know that her husband had killed Sergio? She was sure they didn't because if they did, they would treat her with contempt. The maid cleared her throat to bring back Hazel's attention.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Thank you so much for this" She accepted the tray and took it into her room. She would eat now and check out the place later. Moreover, why was she served breakfast in her room? Wasn't there a dining table?
"Where is Alessandro?" Hazel thought as she sat on the bed. She hadn't seen him since she had that terrible nightmare. She hoped he didn't suspect her already. It was too early to raise his suspicions or she would pay for it.
"You have to be calm Hazel" she sighed. Maybe a change of surroundings would do her good.
She settled down on the bedside table to devour her mouthwatering breakfast. Everything about her room marveled at her and she wondered what the entire house would look like. Hazel caught her breath at the scenery before her.
"Oh wow his house overlooks the city also"
The aroma of freshly baked croissants filled up her nostrils and her belly rumbled. The tray consisted of croissants, omelet, jam, bacon, and a cup of espresso coffee.
Hazel gobbled it down as she looked around the room. It was indeed too big for her alone. To her left was a cream ornately carved dressing table, with a long-fitting mirror before it. On it were toiletries enough to last her a year.
Hazel smiled. She wasn't really one to use makeup. She didn't dislike them but they never caught her fancy. She ran her leg on the thick crimson oriental rug on the floor as she drank her rich coffee.
She moistened her lips and savored the rich taste of the coffee. It had been a very long time since she ate something as rich as this.
"Get up Hazel. You have to see Romeo" a voice summoned her to her feet and she immediately rose. Alessandro had sent Romeo back to Italy before them. She had to see the boy.
Her heart ached for the poor boy whom Brady had subjected to a wheelchair. She made a mental note to call Avery as soon she attended to Romeo for the day.
"Where is the kitchen? I must have lost my way" she said as she padded around the house with the tray in her hands. The sound of a knife making contact with a chopping board alerted her and she moved in its direction.
"Hello" she smiled as she entered. The maid's eyes widened before she concealed her shock and hurried to collect the tray in her hands. "Welcome, ma'am. I am Martha the cook" she tried to fake a smile
"Thank you Martha. I am Hazel" Hazel replied as she toyed with the hem of her gown. She was shy. The woman ogled at her like she had seen her before.
"Your eyes…" Martha said. She couldn't hold her curiosity anymore. Why did Alessandro's new wife look so much like…?
"My eyes? What happened to them?" She said faintly. "Don't worry ma'am. You will find out soon enough" Martha smirked and continued chopping the vegetables. It was almost time for lunch and Alessandro would be home soon.
What was that look Martha gave her and what happened to her eyes? Her mind was roaming but she knew she wouldn't get an answer from the cook.
"Where is Romeo please?" Hazel struggled to find her voice. "On the verandah receiving some fresh air", Martha pointed in the right direction as if she was dismissing
Hazel strolled out. She approached the verandah slowly. Romeo's back was facing her. She rubbed her sweaty palms on her gown. Why was she feeling jitters all of a sudden? She closed her eyes and uttered a silent prayer.
As if on cue, Romeo's eyes turned to her. He had heard someone's footsteps. "He has blue eyes just like Alessandro's" she noted. However, Alessandro's was a shade darker. She had noticed when he glared at her. Did it run in their family? Then she took her gaze to his legs.
Hazel gasped and held the wall for support. His legs were covered in plaster. Did Brady's drunkenness really do that to the poor boy? "Oh, Brady. Look what you caused!" She swallowed hard as she stared back into those eyes. Midwinter blue.
"Hey Romeo," she muttered incoherently.
