Matthew's POV
I did not understand what was going on and why the mate of any wolf in their right senses would want a rejection. Knowing how heartbreaking it was.
I drew a really deep breath as she ran away from me.
At first, I wanted to go after her but then, I was able to restrain myself from doing so. We could meet some other time. I needed to allow her space to think about what was going on.
The one thing that I should be thinking about was returning home to see Jayden. I had not told him anywhere about where I was going to and I was so sure that he was already getting worried because that part of him was buried deep down in his nature.
I drove home slightly. At some point, I was angry about what she did but at some other time. I just let it go because the anger was just not worth it.
I sighed deeply.
I got home finally and just as I had expected. He was already waiting for me.
"Where have you been?" He threw the question at me since I was not used to behaving that way.
But I was not in the mood to give him any response so I walked over to the sofa and crashed into it.
He walked gradually towards me and from the look that was hanging on his face, I could tell that he was every single bit worried.
"What's wrong?" He inquired staring right into my eyes and I stared back at him.
I saw myself lying to him but I could not get myself to do it. Something told me that his wolf was going to notice.
Since we were style mates, the bond was there. Even though it was beginning to dwindle lately.
But I thought about telling him the truth and the gravity of the consequences that were going to come with it.
I could not get myself to do it. I was going to shatter him. Up to his bones.
Besides, I was the reason that he had left his pack and I could not believe that I was going to give him any reason for him to think that I was going to leave him soon.
"Why aren't you saying anything? You are getting me ." He returned to me.
"I just had a really bad day. I had to go for an emergency meeting." I lied to him but from the look on his face, it said it all. I was such a terrible liar
I sighed deeply, trying hard to think of something that I was going to say to him but the ideas just weren't Forthcoming And that was annoying but I tried as much as I could not show it
"You can talk to me about anything. You already know that right?" He noted.
I knew that already.
Maybe it was time to tell him the truth
I knew too well that sooner or later. He was going to find out about it and that was going to make things worse
Maybe I had to tell him now when the consequences would not have escalated to a point that would not be managed.
"I found my mate. Today at work." I explained to him and I watched his face closely for any improper expression
He turned around immediately. I could feel both of our wolves hurt almost at the same time, he was hurt.
I was so Sorry for putting him in such a position but there was absolutely nothing that I could do about it.
I sighed again
He seemed to push something off from his eyes and in this matter, tears were the only relevant thing.
He turned around towards me slowly.
"I knew right from the very start that it was certainly going to come to this. The way that our wolves were beginning to draft away as though we were never made for each." He mumbled.
"I am sorry." I apologized
"You don't have to be. It's not your fault. It's just the fate that we have to go through together." He noted
He tried to make a light out of the whole situation as he always did but I knew for sure that this time, it was not going to be that easy for me.
"So tell me. What does this mate of ours look like?" He slipped in his words and I caught him right on track.
"I am sorry about that. A mate of yours I wanted to say." He corrected himself.
"Okay. There is no problem about that." He returned to me.
"But I have to say that I hold little to no information about her. Hmm, I think she is 21 years old, with a lean figure, dark hair, and hazel eyes."
"That is the highest detail of her that I could remember," I noted staring back at him but he did not even seem to be listening to me anymore.
He was back to his always serious look and this time. It seemed as though he was lost in thoughts and it left me confused.
"What could he be thinking about?" My subconsciousness yelled out from the inside of me but I could not get any clue as to that.
"What's wrong?" I inquired of him, snapping him off from his thoughts in the most inappropriate way but he did not give any response to that effect
"Can you remember the clothes that she was putting on when she came into your office?" He Inquired.
With each question that he threw at me, I was getting even more confused than I was in the first instance but I was not worried about it.
I knew that it was leading somewhere and soon, I was going to be on the same page with him.
Or so I thought
I had never thought about the dress that she wore into my office that day before I was so lost staring into her eyes that I didn't take note of any of those details.
But I wrecked my brain trying as hard as I could to remember. Besides, it was our first-day meeting so it would be most inappropriate for me not to remember what she was putting on.
Then it struck me
"A light milk silk gown and a cotton jacket. I think white." I finally gave an answer to the question and his eyes brightened.
"Wait, do you know her from anywhere?" I inquired.
"I think I have seen her somewhere but I can't ascertain until I get to see her myself. Can I join you to work tomorrow so that you are going to introduce your mate to me?" He inquired with eyes that I could not say no to but I was a little bit hesitant to give him a response.
I sighed deeply while he continued to stare at me, waiting for a response from my end.
"Aren't you saying anything or is there something else that you want to talk to me about?" He inquired but I shook my head almost immediately.
"Certainly not," I replied to him.
"You are welcome to always come to my office anytime you feel like," I replied and he appreciated me.
"I would be in bed if you want to join me." He noted and before I could say anything, he was gone.
I could not sleep throughout that night as I kept on having storms of nightmares. Something was off.
Something was going to happen tomorrow but I could not tell exactly what and that was the main reason that I was worried.
My wolf tried to put off my fears.
"Both of your mates are meeting. What could go wrong? I don't understand why you are so worried. It's so unlike you." My wolf noted but none of that worked on me this time as I kept thinking about the future events.
Sometimes, I wished that I had the powers to teleport into the future but I knew for sure that it was not possible.
"If you don't have anything better to say. I think you should just go to rest and let me be." I returned to my wolf and I realized that it was Howling.
"Should I go to rest? Do you even realize that we share a bond here and when you are worried I am equally worried?" He Inquired.
"Then stay up without having to disturb me will you?"
"One thing that I can't wait to see is the clash between the both of your mates tomorrow." He mocked but to me, that was so not funny.
I decided that I was not going to give him any listening ears.
And at some point, I tried as much as I could believe the words that he had said to me before.
Both of my mates are coming together. What could ever go wrong." The thoughts rang in my head again and this time, I responded to my thoughts.
"A lot," I replied.
