What if they are no longer alive?

What if they are no longer alive?

"She lost her memories!!!"

Jadiel's loud remark shrouded in incredulity shattered the awkward silence that lingered in the private room.

Well, it wasn’t just Jadiel but also the rest of the people gathered in the room who had similar shocked expressions on their faces as they stood speechless after hearing doctor Lyell's declaration.

"What did you mean by that? How can she lose her memories?" Jadiel inquired in a trembling voice.

It was nearly impossible to believe that a mere head injury could wipe out an individual's memory without leaving any traces. It was something he had only seen in movies and read in books.

He spent the last few hours worrying whether the girl might survive or not. He even prepared himself to go to prison as a murderer. But not even in his scariest nightmares, Jadiel never expected such a turn of situations- memory loss? Isn’t it as terrifying as death? How can someone like

Unable to hide his fear, Jadiel opened his mouth to ask for confirmation from Everett, who stood there with a deadpan expression adorning his handsome face. God! How can first brother stay aloof even under such an earth-shattering situation?

"First brother, how is that even possible? Even the hitting impa-"

However, even before Jadiel could finish his question, Everett's murderous glare fell on him.

Jadiel immediately gulped down the words that boiled in his mind and looked away from Everett, but only to lock his eyes with the girl.

Oh no!!!! He almost screamed in his mind when the realization hit hard.

For a moment, he forgot the fact that the patient was awake, and she was listening to their conversations.

He was acting like a heartless jerk and hurt someone by spilling brutal truths to their face.

"Aissshhh!!!! Your stupid mouth." Jadiel muttered under his breath as he lowered his eyes from the girl, who was staring at him.

Well, she might have lost her memories, that doesn’t mean that she lost her senses. She could easily comprehend the meaning of their conversations.

At that moment, Jadiel realized why the resident doctors remained silent even after the primary diagnosis. They were waiting for the chief doctor, who was experienced enough to handle the situation carefully.

"Why don't you all wait outside and let the patient take a rest for some time?" Bennet Lyell suggested when he saw the clueless face of the patient.

As a neurologist, he was familiar with the particular situation, when amnesiac patients realise that they have lost a major portion of their life- it must be heart-wrenching and some patients might find it difficult to cope up with their medical condition.

Bennet who read the confusing atmosphere in the room sent everyone out other than the duty nurses who are in charge of the patient.

As soon as Jadiel walked out of the private room, he prepared himself to get scolded by his first brother for making a scene in front of everyone. However, to the young man's surprise, Everett remained silent as if he decided to overlook the pea-brained chauffeur's panic stricken rambles.

While the resident doctors immersed themselves in discussing the patient’s medical condition, two policemen approached the private room in steady steps.

“Goodmorning, I’m Detective Lewis Garcia. We are here to take the statement from the accident victim. How’s the patient?" One of the policemen asked the doctor.

"She is awake, but I don't think you will be able to get a statement from the patient. She is having an episode of memory loss.” One of the doctors elucidated and turned his glance to Emory who stood in the corridor with others. “If you want to ask something, it's better to ask these people. They are the ones who brought the patient to the ER.”

Since Emory registered himself as the temporary guardian for the accident victim, the doctors directed the policemen towards him.

But the moment Jadiel saw the police, he unknowingly hid behind Everett's towering figure like a scaredy cat.

It felt like his nightmares of going to prison were becoming true.

However, one of the policemen walked over with a smile and warmly greeted Emory as if they knew each other.

"Elder Silvius, it's been a while.” The man who introduced himself as Lewis Garcia extended his hand to Emory to refresh their acquaintance.

"Yes. It is. How are you, Detective Garcia?" Emory shook hands with the other as he returned the greetings. “I never knew that you got transferred to the west side.”

"It was more like a punishment transfer. I couldn't even get the time to pack my bags." Lewis acknowledged, rather bitterly. "But life in the westside is much more peaceful, so yeah, I can say that I'm doing great. What about you, Elder Silvius?"

"Well, Life in Helos city is also peaceful since my sons have taken over the business.” Emory pleasantly replied and looked over his son, who stood beside him. "Everett, my eldest son."

As soon as Everett heard his father introducing him to the policemen, he gently bowed his head to show respect.

There were very few policemen in the city who held a close relationship with his father, so he did not hesitate to greet Lewis Garcia without any second thoughts.

"Of course, who doesn't know the first young master of the Silvius family?" Lewis Garcia acknowledged the other with his honest words. Amberwood Corporation was the ultimate bigshots of the Helos city, and how can he not know the CEO?

After sharing one or two words of pleasantries, Lewis switched to his professional mode.

"The doctors said that you took the victim to the hospital. How did you end up getting into this mess of an accident case?"

"Hmm...she ran towards our car.” Emory honestly admitted that there is no point in hiding the truth from someone who can help them. Though Lewis took the old man's words calmly, the young officer who accompanied him almost snapped back in shock.

“You hit the patient?" He quickly sought clarity regarding the truth behind the accident. "But the reports said that you brought the victim to the hospital?"

Just as Emory opened his mouth to explain, the chief doctor walked out of the private room, gathering attention from everyone.

"Professor, police officers are here for the enquiry report." One of the resident doctors informed Bennet Lyell about the situation. Since it was an accident case, it was a formality to seek the medical report to proceed with the follow-up procedures.

"Though the patient was taken into ER as a road accident victim, her injuries, especially the head injury-it is not caused by the impact of getting hit by a car." Doctor Lyell began to explain as he handed over the scanning report

"What do you mean, doctor?" Lewis doubtingly asked as he skimmed through the report.

"Rather than getting injured by hitting the head on the road. The injury appears more like blunt force trauma as if she got hit by a baseball bat or something heavy rod-like object."

"Are you saying that it's a physical assault?"

"Yes. The bruises and marks on the patient's body, the traces of sedatives in the bloodstream. There is a high chance that someone has purposefully hurt her.” The doctor shared the main inferences from the report.

Hearing the doctor's statements, Lewis exchanged glances with Emory, who was equally surprised by the turn of events.

“So can we conclude that she had the head injury before the accident?" He inquired when the accident case had turned into assault and bodily harm.

"It seems like that. She was extremely dehydrated and tired, so getting hit by the car must have amplified the effects of the trauma."

"It looked like she got chased by something or someone," Jadiel, who silently hid behind his first brother and shared whatever he saw just before the car hit the girl."

When Lewis Garcia heard the feeble voice, he moved his upper torso to see the young man who partially hid behind Everett.

"Who is he?"

"He is my driver- Jadiel.” Emory replied and gestured to Jadiel to come forward so that the police officers could record his statement as the first witness.

Since the doctor confirmed that the patient's injuries are not caused by the car, Everett moved aside and signalled Jadiel to give his statement.

Once they gathered enough information, Lewis Garcia turned to the duty doctor to ask about the patient's identity.

"No, there weren't any identification documents with her.”

“Then we have to look in the data servers using the fingerprints or photographs. Anyway, let me go and meet the patient." Lewis slightly bowed his head and went to check the patient.

As soon as the police officers left from their sight, Jadiel let out a sigh of relief and approached Emory with a bright face.

"Boss, when will we be able to go home?" Jadiel anticipatingly asked. After giving his primary statement, he felt like the heavy burden on his chest got removed and finally he could breathe.

"If they manage to contact her family, we are free to go." Emory answered as he walked towards the waiting area in the corridor whereas his son moved to the opposite direction as he got a phone call.

After a while, the young police officer came out of the private room and called Emory and others inside.

As they entered the room, their eyes fell on the girl who sat on the bed, gently reclining on the head rest.

"Miss, they were the ones who brought you here.” Guan Lin Zhen explained as he stood up from the seat, intending to wrap up the conversation with the patient.

Hearing the detective's words, Emory moved closer and introduced himself in the gentlest tone he had ever spoken.

“ Don't worry about anything, we will make sure to find your family and let them know that you are out of danger.” He gave a word of assurance to the girl who remained with an emotionless face.

"Until then, we will stay here."

“Elder Silvius, since we have collected your primary statements, you are free to go. I will let you know if there are any leads.” Lewis stated. Normally whenever there is an accident, people often ignore the victims or just inform the emergency force, but Emory brought the patient to the hospital but also stayed until the patient woke up, despite his status.

“Hmm. Thank you for your cooperation. Detective Garcia” Emory thanked and allowed the policeman to leave.

“Boss, are we going to stay here?" Jadiel bit his nails when he found that his boss was planning to stay at the hospital until the patient’s family arrives.

“Yes. How can we leave her alone here?” Emory rebuked and took a seat on the couch in the room as if he made the final decision. He wanted to make sure that the girl is safe and secure until her family arrives.

“But boss, what about madam, she is alone at home?”

"You two can leave, I will stay here." Everett declared in a steely voice, leaving everyone dumbfounded. Even the girl who was silently lying on the bed was surprised with his declaration.

"Huh? If you stay here, then who will take care of the things in Helos?” Emory wondered. He was an old man who is now enjoying his retired life, but that is not the case with his eldest son. The entire responsibility of Amberwood Corporation was on Everett’s shoulders.

“Mom called me and said that she will reach home by today evening. Apparently, Ed might stay in the capital for a little longer. So it is better that you leave now." Everett shared the details of the call he received a while ago.

“But still, you need to be present at the general meeting. You go home.”

While the father-son duo argued with each other, Jadiel’s brain was churning like a machine as he searched for the possible reasons for his first brother’s change.

What could have gone wrong in a night? Why is the first brother acting weirdly?” He thought and unknowingly locked his eyes with the girl.

“Don’t tell me, he fell for this human girl?” Jadiel gaped like a goldfish as he looked at Everett and the girl.

Of course. She was a ravishing beauty and it wouldn’t be a lie to say that she was far more beautiful than the pretty luna’s in their pack.

"I will return home once I settle this issue. It may not take any longer for the results.”

“Boss, let’s listen to the first brother and go home.” Jadiel urged his boss as he moved closer to Emory.

“If you want to go home, you leave.”

“Boss, listen to me.” Jadiel faced Emory and mouthed something which immediately made the oldman to agree with him.

“Okay then. We will leave. You stay here and take care of her.” He smilingly said and walked closer to the bed.

“Don’t worry, my son will be staying here. If you need anything just ask him.” Emory instructed the girl with a doting smile.

Whether it is because of his amiable personality or his inborn aura of a caring father, the girl nodded with a faint smile.

“Bye, then. We will visit you soon.” Emory bid his farewell and turned towards Jadiel was stood there with a big fat smile on his face,

“I hope I will see you again, sister.” He enthusiastically waved his hand and gave way for Emory who ambled towards the door.

“First brother, take care of sister- in...sister..” Jadiel stuttered as he saw the darkened face of Everett. “Haa, I can’t wait to tell my second brother.” He mumbled as he walked past the man who stood like a mountain

“Don’t even think about blabbering everything to your second brother.” Everett reminded him.

“Huh. I don’t blabber...I just...how did yo…” Jadiel yelped in absolute disbelief. Everett crossed his muscular arms over his chest and tilted his head as if taunting

“Leave.”

“I’m leaving…Bye sist-”

“THUD!!!!!” The door slammed on Jadiel’s face.

“Sorry, he is kind of...loud…” Everett said as he moved away from the door.

“You can sleep if you want or do you want to eat anything? Did the doctor say that you can have food?”

“No.” The girl replied in a soft voice, her beautiful eyes never leaving him

“Ah okay. Do you mind if I sit here?” Everett asked them girl, who wobbled her head into a “No”

He sat on the couch with a conflicted look on his face. In his thirty two years of life, it was the first time Everett appeared flustered to sit in the same room with a woman. There was something bewitching about her, that kept his heart trembling in an unknown fear.

“What..if.. they.. can’t find my family?” Her question resonated in the room, forcing Everett to look at her gorgeous face. It was the first time she spoke a complete sentence.

“Do not underestimate the power of the imperial police force. Finding someone’s background is just a cake-walk for them.” He replied with a smirk as he felt that she wanted to meet her family. “If they can’t find your family, we will look for them. So don’t worry.” He reassured the worried girl.

“That police officer said that someone purposely tried to hurt me. Then what are the chances that my family is safe out there?”

Her question rendered Everett speechless for a long minute.

He never thought about that possibility as he adamantly believed that police could find her family. But what if she doesn't have a family,

or worse,

What if they are no longer alive?
