The dark ominous rain clouds gave way for the bright morning sun as the huge building of the West city hospital stood erect under the glistening golden sunlight, buzzing with the staff who came for the morning shift.
In the busy corridor of the emergency room, two men remained in deep slumber as they somehow reclined their bodies to the chairs in the waiting area, unaware of the arrival of dawn.
"Everett, wake up," Emory’s gentle voice entered Everett’s ears, forcing him to wake from his uncomfortable sleeping position.
"Dad," He mumbled in a morning hoarse voice and slowly opened his heavy eyelids.
Squinting his eyes to the bright light, Everett moved a little and realized that the uncomfortable sleeping position had stiffened his muscles.
As he stretched his upper body with a groan, he felt something heavy on his shoulder that restricted his movements.
He looked over to his right side and saw Jadiel’s clinging to him like a koala baby to its mother.
Without any second thought, he shoved Jadiel's head away from him and dusted his shoulder with the back of his palm.
"I didn't kill anyone, sir," Jadiel yelled out in horror when he was jolted awake from his nightmare with heavy propel.
"Jadiel!!!!" Emory let out a sigh and shook the young boy’s shoulder to wake up from his sleep.
Rubbing his eyes with his palm, Jadiel looked around the brightly illuminated place, once again.
“It’s not the court?" He mumbled and scratched his messy hair as his face got decorated with visible confusion.
"Court? it is the hospital," Emory pointed at the signboard of the emergency room and hammered down the reality into his brain.
“Don’t you remember staying here?”
"Ahhh," Jadiel carelessly wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth with his palm and tried to recall last night’s events that led him to stay at the hospital. As he regained his bearings, he right away opened his mouth to enquire about the girl.
“How’s that girl? Did she wake up?” He sounded anticipated as he looked at his boss. “Not yet. Why don’t you both return to the hotel and freshen up? In the meantime, I will wait here.” Emory studied the sleepy faces of the men who sat before him and suggested.
Since they were tired and sleep-deprived, Everett agreed without any reluctance and stood up from the seat. When he figured out that Jadiel was hesitating to leave the hospital, he glared at the boy who sat on the chair like a timid puppy, unwilling to leave its kennel under the watchful eyes of a top dog.
When Jadiel felt a murderous glare on him, he tilted his head and looked at the man who stood next to him with fuming eyes,
Watching Everett’s seething demeanour, he subconsciously rose to his feet and followed him, like an obedient puppy.
He doesn’t want to blow up the boiling anger of the tyrant first thing in the morning.
On the way to the hotel, an unbearable solemn silence lingered inside the car. Since Jadiel already tasted his first brother’s silent treatment, remained quiet without asking for the steering wheel as he watched the less crowded roads without any morning traffic.
The duo reached the hotel within a short time. Since Emory had already informed the hotel staff about them, Everett and Jadiel were escorted to the suite room, without any questions.
“Order some food if you want,” Everett instructed the bewildered Jadiel who was observing the luxurious suite room with a pair of enthralled eyes,
It was his first time visiting a luxurious suite room.
Though he wished to spend some leisure time, using up his unexpected chance to stay at the suite, he decided to take a quick shower and get back to the hospital as soon as possible.
When Jadiel came out of the bathroom after a quick shower, he saw Everett sitting on the couch, scrolling on his mobile while sipping on his morning coffee.
A fancy-looking breakfast with coffee and juice was placed on the table before him.
“Thank you, first brother,” Jadiel smilingly replied and sat across the table for the breakfast and began to eat while occasionally stealing glances at Everett,
Wait a minute, why does the first brother appear extremely good looking today? It was true that he had heaven-defying looks that are capable of making anyone fall for him. But why did he dress up so nicely as if he was going on a date?” Jadiel doubted and looked at his reflection on the spoon.
Both of them were unable to fall asleep last night, but how come Everett looked so fresh and handsome while he looked trash?
Even before Jadiel could finish his breakfast, they received a phone call from Emory informing them that they are shifting the patient to a private room since her observation period was over.
As soon as he heard the word 'Shifting' Everett almost dragged Jadiel to his car and drove to the hospital with maximum speed as if he was under an adrenaline rush.
The moment the car got stopped in the parking lot, Jadiel opened the car door, clutching his stomach, as if he was hit with nausea from a heavy roller coaster ride.
“Are you coming or not?” Everett snarled as he made his way out of the parking lot,
While holding his knees, Jadiel stood bending and tried to get over the churning feeling that had been rising from his stomach.
“I’m...coming…,” He waved his hands at Everett and somehow tailed his first brother with staggering legs.
Through the crowded corridors, both of them rushed to the private ward on the top floor.
However, when Everett reached the room, he abruptly stopped in his tracks when a crazy thought flashed in his mind. He grabbed the door handle and opened it for Jadiel who came running after him.
"Oh thank you, first brother," Jadiel thanked while catching his breath and entered the room unaware of Everett’s plan.
However, the moment he stepped into the room and caught the sight of the women lying in the bed, he was left bedazzled,
"What a beauty!!!!" He didn’t even try to stop the words that left his mouth, as he stood there staring at her without blinking his eyes.
How did he fail to notice her beauty during last night's commotion? Jadiel thought for a moment and shifted his glance to Emory who was trying hard to hold his laughter.
"Did we make any mistakes, boss? Are you sure that it is the same girl whom we brought into the ER?" He doubtingly asked.
"If you are done ogling, then move aside," Everett harshly demanded as he stood behind a dazed Jadiel.
Jadiel robotically turned his head and took a look at one of the marvellous creations of God, that's perfect in every sense, except the personality.
"You are not surprised?" He beseeched a similar reply from Everett, but only to get looked down with a condescending sneer.
Unlike him, Everett appeared nonchalant as if he is not at all affected by the beauty.
"Should I try waking her up?" Everett ignored Jadiel completely as he walked past him to his father.
When Emory caught sight of his son's indifferent demeanour, he couldn’t help but wonder about his wife,
For the last few years, his wife has been looking for a perfect bride for their sons.
If his wife happened to be here at the moment, she would've made this pretty girl, her daughter in law, right away.
"Dad," Everett called his father who was lost in thoughts, "How about we wake her up?"
"Ahhh...The doctors in the ER have referred to a neurologist and said he will drop by during the morning rounds." Emory informed and looked in the direction of the girl as he opened his mouth to make a random remark.
"She looks like an actress from my time, I wonder whether this girl is related to her."
He tried to gather his son’s attention to the girl, However instead Everett, Jadiel was the one who replied to his comment,
"I don't think so. If she is a celebrity, then she would've been popular... like really really popular... God, she is even prettier than Valerie Langston !!!" Jadiel enthusiastically remarked as he struggled to revert his eyes from the girl.
"Who is that?" The lines on Emory’s forehead creased as he spoke.
"Ed's new girlfriend." Everett who remained silent till now, opened his mouth to betray his brother,
"What?" Emory was at a loss for words, "He is with a new woman?"
"No..no... Second brother said that she is only a friend," Jadiel tried to speak for his beloved second brother.
"That brat!!!” Emory touched his forehead in worry and immediately looked at Jadiel, “I know you are closer to him but don't you dare to pick up his obscene habits.”
As soon as Emory’s advised Jadiel, a faint nod was heard on the door and the next moment, a group of medical staff entered the private room to check the patient who was still unconscious,
Bennet Lyell, the senior doctor in the group, asked one of the resident doctors to wake the patient, as he stood aside supervising them.
“Patient, can you hear me?” The resident doctor tried to wake her up, however even after repeating for a few times, there weren’t any responses from the patient.
The doctor took a deep breath and checked the monitoring system which indicated the patient’s vital’s.
Since her respiration and heart rate seems normal, he carefully shook the patient's shoulder and tried to wake her up.
“Patient, can you-” All of sudden, his words stuck in the throat when he saw a slight movement of irises under her thick eyelids.
In a glimpse, her long eyelashes fluttered open, revealing a pair of ink-black irises and she woke up like a beauty who has been cursed to deep sleep for a thousand years,
The doctor let out a sigh of relief and glanced at Bennet Lyell,
“Eyes open to speech.” He reported in a smiling voice and reverted his eyes back to the girl who was looking at him,
“Can you tell me your name?” He anticipatingly inquired.
The girl opened her mouth to answer in a feeble voice,
“I’m...I’m,” Her half-closed eyes flickered and her chapped lips trembled as she tried to speak.
“Hmm, you are?” The doctor encouraged her to speak again, however, the girl appeared confused as she repeated the same.
“I… I,” She mumbled as her black eyes drifted here and there, unable to fix her gaze.
“Dr Simmers” Bennet Lyell called out for the resident and gestured to stop as he moved closer to the patient’s bed.
“It’s alright if you can’t remember your name,” he told the girl with a gentle smile. However, doctor Lyell's words hit the rest of the people in the room like bolts of lightning.
“Doctor, did she lose-” Emory stopped in the mid-sentence and glanced at the girl whose eyes were blankly fixed on them,
“Did she forget her name?” He rephrased and inquired, the doctor.
“There is a chance of memory loss,” Bennet monotonously stated, “It can be temporary but in some rare cases, there is a chance for permanent memory loss.”
