My name is Sofia Lopez, and I am a partner at a prestigious law firm in New York. I am twenty-eight years old, have dark hair, honey-colored eyes, and can handle any difficult case, except the one that appeared in my office one day without warning.
"Sofia, Mr. Mark Harris is outside and says he needs to speak with you urgently," my secretary Lina told me.
"Mark Harris? I don't have an appointment with that gentleman, nor do I know who he is. Tell him to make an appointment, Lina. I'm very busy right now," I replied.
Lina left my office while I continued preparing documents for a trial I had in three days when suddenly I heard the door to my office slam open. I looked towards the door and saw a very tall man dressed in an expensive suit, with tanned skin, black hair, and green eyes like emeralds.
"I need you to see me now," he said, shouting.
"Excuse me, but I only see people by appointment. I'm very busy right now," I said, getting up from my chair and approaching the man.
"I can't wait. You're a lawyer, aren't you? I'll pay you whatever you ask. Money is not a problem. What I need from you is to marry me," he said, making me laugh.
"I don't need your money, but you certainly need a psychiatrist. But if it's that urgent, please take a seat and tell me what this matter is that you need to talk to me about," I said.
"I am the CEO of Harris Telecommunications and Transport," he said, making me laugh again.
"I don't know you at all, and besides, I have a fiancé," I said.
"Look at these photos, miss, and tell me if you're still going to marry your fiancé," he said, handing me a large envelope.
When I opened the envelope and saw photographs of my fiancé entering a hotel with a woman I didn't know, followed by another photo of them in the room, both naked and making love, along with several more, I was left speechless.
"Will you marry me now, Miss Lopez?" he asked.
"Where did you get these photos, Mr. Harris?" I asked.
"I had a detective follow you and your fiancé. I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision in choosing you to be the mother of my daughter and my wife," he said.
"Why me? There are plenty of women who would be thrilled to be the wife of a billionaire," I said.
"Because your mother was my father's mistress and the reason my parents divorced when you gave birth to a girl who, as I told you, is my daughter. I know where you come from and almost all your life, and if you don't want it all to come out in the tabloids, I expect your answer to be yes. Your secretary has my phone number. Good day." He got up from the chair, opened the door to my office, and left without saying anything else.
As soon as Mark Harris left my office, I gathered all the documents on my desk, nervously put them away in the drawer, got up from my chair, and took my purse from the coat rack to leave. I urgently needed to talk to my mother, as Harris had threatened to expose my life in the tabloids.
"Sofia, I need-" one of my partners, Davis, began to say.
"Not now, Davis. I have to leave urgently," I replied, very nervously.
"Lina, if anyone calls, schedule them for this afternoon, please. I have to leave now," I said.
I walked over to the elevators and took one down to the parking garage where I had my car. I got in my vehicle, started it nervously, and left the building, heading to the house where my parents lived. I arrived, parked on the street, and rang the doorbell. Nancy, the maid, answered the door.
"Good morning, Sofia," she said.
"Nancy, is my mother home?" I asked as we entered the house.
"Yes, dear, she's by the pool. Would you like something cool to drink?"
"Yes, please."It's very warm ," I replied.
I went straight to the pool and saw my mother lying on one of the loungers, sunbathing.
"Good morning, Mom," I greeted her.
"Sofia, darling, you finished work early today. I'm glad we can have lunch together," she responded.
"The truth is, I came for another reason, Mom," I said seriously, and she sat up, gesturing for me to sit next to her.
"What's wrong, Sofia? Did you and Hugo have a fight? Is that it?"
"That's one of the issues. Mom, do you know Mark Harris from the communications company with his name?" I asked, watching my mother's expression change.
"Why do you ask, Sofia? Yes, your father and I know them. The father just passed away in a car accident," she replied.
"Mom, were you the mistress of Mark Harris's father?" I asked, seeing her grow nervous at my question.
"Sofia, I don't understand why you're so interested," she replied.
"Mom, answer the question, please," I insisted.
"Sofia, darling, I fell madly in love with William Harris. We saw each other in secret for two years until your father found out and gave me an ultimatum. But why are you asking?" she said.
"Today, one of his sons, Mark, came to my office. He proposed to me and told me everything. Although I didn't believe him at first, I needed to hear it from you. He threatened to expose your secret if I don't accept his proposal. He also found out that I gave birth to a daughter two years ago," I explained.
"Darling, what are you going to do? You're engaged to Hugo."
"I don't know, Mom. I need to protect my family's reputation, and especially mine. Besides, Hugo is cheating on me with another woman. Harris gave me several photos confirming it," I said, as my mother hugged me, knowing I was not well with this revelation.
"I'm so sorry, dear. You know I'll help you with whatever you need. Do you want me to talk to this Mark?"
"I don't think that's a good idea. He blames you for his mother leaving them," I replied.
