Chapter 3 WITH MILLER'S LAWYER

Chapter 3 WITH MILLER'S LAWYER

I stayed at the club, sitting in one of the armchairs with my drink, when I saw my fiancé, Hugo, walk in, embracing a tall, beautiful blonde woman who was the complete opposite of me. I got up from my seat, trying to go unnoticed, but Hugo's eyes met mine, and he looked serious. I approached them, introducing myself to the woman with Hugo as his fiancée. The slap she gave Hugo left a mark on his face, but I didn't just watch. I slapped him too, breaking his lip.

"I suppose you know we're finished," I said, throwing the engagement ring he gave me at his face and storming out of the club.

I got into my car, laughing uncontrollably with my hands on the steering wheel, not caring about the strange looks from people around me. The next day, I woke up startled from a nightmare about Mark Harris. I got out of bed, went to the bathroom, took off my pajamas, and stepped into the shower, letting the water flow over my neck and back to relax. Afterward, I put on the bathrobe hanging on the bathroom door and went to the kitchen where Nancy was preparing a cup of coffee.

"Good morning, Nancy."

"Good morning, darling. I left some pastries and toast with your coffee on the table," she said.

I grabbed the cup of coffee Nancy made and sat in one of the kitchen chairs.

"Good morning," my mother said as she entered the kitchen.

"Good morning, ma'am. Here's your cup of coffee," the maid said.

"Darling, have you spoken to that man again?" my mother asked.

"No, Mom. I haven't heard anything. I have to go; I'm running late," I said, getting up from the chair and leaving the cup on the kitchen counter.

I went to my bedroom, put on a business suit and shoes, grabbed my purse, and left the house. I got into my car and drove to the building where the firm was located. Upon arrival, I parked in the garage and went to the elevators, taking the first one up to my floor. I greeted Lina, my secretary, and entered my office. As soon as I sat down, Lina came in with my morning coffee and the documents for the trial I had the next day. Absorbed in the paperwork on my desk, I heard a knock on the door and gave permission to enter. Mark Harris walked in with two men.

"To what do I owe this early visit, Mr. Harris?" I asked.

"I came to inform you that the wedding will take place in two days at the courthouse. Don't wear anything too fancy. Since it will be a civil ceremony, I will go to work afterward, and you will stay at my house," he said.

"Oh, and no white dress with bridesmaids and waiting for the groom at the altar, right?" I asked.

"Dear Sofia, I don't want your family at our wedding, and I doubt my brother will attend," he said seriously.

"I'll see you this afternoon at my office. We'll sign a contract in front of my lawyers since there are certain clauses I want my lawyers to explain to you. See you this afternoon, Miss Lopez," he said, leaving my office with a slam, a habit he seemed to have developed.

I spent the whole morning deep in thought, handing the documents for that morning's trial to one of the firm's lawyers. I trusted him to handle it well since we always reviewed cases together thoroughly. After eating a vegetable sandwich and drinking coffee in my office, I left without telling my secretary where I was going, leaving her puzzled. I parked in the Harris building's garage, took the elevator up, and went to Mark Harris's office. I approached a woman at a desk, reading her nameplate and seeing she was Harris's assistant.

"Good afternoon. My name is Sofia Lopez. Mr. Harris is expecting me," I said.

"Yes, Miss Lopez. You may enter Mr. Harris's office. They are waiting for you," she said.

I walked to the office door, opened it, and entered without waiting for permission. I stood at the door, taking in the luxurious office and all its details.

"Good afternoon, Miss Lopez," a voice said, pulling me from my thoughts.

A man approached me, smiling and dressed in an expensive suit.

"Good afternoon, Miss Lopez. Please have a seat. Mr. Miller will arrive shortly. By the way, I'm Roberto Mails, Mr. Harris's lawyer," he said, offering his hand.

"I have meetings, and I hope Mr. Harris doesn't delay. I am also a lawyer and have an important client to attend to at my office," I said.

"While we wait for my client, we could review a confidentiality contract I have here, if that's alright with you. I suppose, being a lawyer, you'll understand all the points," the lawyer said.

"This contract obliges both parties to keep everything said in this meeting and any future conversations with my client confidential," he explained, handing me the documents.

"Don't worry, I understand that as an important CEO, he has to protect his identity," I said.
