Chapter 4 MEETING A LITTLE GIRL

Chapter 4 MEETING A LITTLE GIRL

I began reviewing the documents while Harris's lawyer spoke.

"I want you to know that Mr. Harris will go to court if you violate these clauses, as this meeting will discuss sensitive personal matters that could damage your reputation and your family's. I assume you understand that as a lawyer," he said.

"I don't understand why my private life should be discussed. Mr. Harris proposed marriage, but my private life will remain mine," I replied.

"Miss Lopez, what I'm saying is that you could go to jail if you share any details of this meeting or the documents you're about to sign with your colleagues or family. There are multiple copies: one for you, one for Mr. Harris, and one for everyone present at this meeting," he said.

Although the lawyer offered me a pen to sign the documents, I hesitated, surprised that this was supposed to be a contractual marriage. On the other hand, I understood, given Mark Harris's status as an important, wealthy man.

"I thought Harris just wanted a simple wedding and a nanny for his daughter," I said.

"No, Miss Lopez, it's not just that," he replied without elaborating.

Harris's lawyer collected the documents I signed and smiled.

"You seem a bit nervous, Miss Lopez. Would you like the assistant to bring you something to drink? Perhaps an herbal tea to calm you?" he asked.

"No, thank you. I just want this meeting to end quickly so I can leave. As I mentioned, I have an important client to attend to," I said.

"Mr. Harris, tell me something that intrigues me. I've signed the documents you gave me, but what is the purpose of this meeting?" I asked.

Just then, the assistant entered the office and addressed the lawyer and me.

"Mr. Harris is on his way to his office. Can I get you something to drink? A coffee?" she asked.

"I don't want anything, thank you," I replied.

"I'll have a coffee, please. You know how I like it," the lawyer responded with a smile.

When the assistant returned with the coffee, the lawyer looked at her warmly as he smiled. He took the coffee and sat in one of the armchairs around the table.

"Miss Lopez, don't be nervous. Mr. Harris wants to offer you stability that he wouldn't give to any other woman," he said, noticing my nervous movements.

"I don't need stability. As you know, I work at an important firm and don't need help from anyone outside my environment," I replied.

My heart raced when the office door suddenly opened, and Mark Harris entered with another man, whom I assumed was another lawyer.

"Miss Lopez, my name is Christopher. Nice to meet you," the man said, shaking my hand.

I looked at the three men, feeling out of place and overwhelmed, knowing Harris's subordinates were too kind, which couldn't be good for me.

"Good afternoon, Miss Lopez. I hope the wait wasn't too uncomfortable," Harris said seriously.

"Don't worry, Mr. Harris, but I would like to finish this meeting quickly. As you know, we are both very busy, and I've already lost a lot of valuable time," I said.

"Then let's begin," Harris said.

He sat in an armchair next to me, handing me some documents. Despite my nerves, Harris seemed very calm, watching me with his striking emerald eyes. Suddenly, I heard the office door open and turned to see who had entered. It was a little girl who peeked at me from behind my chair.

"Excuse me, Sofia. This is my daughter, Cynthia," Harris said. I was stunned, realizing she was the child I had given up for adoption under my parents' threats.

I gazed at the beautiful child as we both smiled, and she gave me a small wave.

"Hello, Cynthia. You are very beautiful," I said.

"Hello, I'm three years old," the little girl said.

"And you're very beautiful. Did you know that?" I said.

"Cynthia, darling, come to Daddy, my precious girl," Harris said.

I watched as Cynthia climbed into her father's lap, feeling an anxiety attack coming on. She had some of my features, confirming Harris hadn't lied-she was indeed the daughter I had given birth to three years ago. Cynthia got down from her father's lap and, as if we had a connection, leaned her little arms on my legs, resting her head on her arms as we looked at each other. She tried to climb onto the chair next to me, so I lifted her under her arms and helped her sit, her small arms wrapping around my neck.
