Chapter 31

I don't sleep. Nobody does. We all just sit around the fires pretending to rest while actually thinking about how we're probably going to die tomorrow.

Around midnight Beth shows up. She sits down across from me without asking.

"What do you want?" I ask.

"To talk."

"We have nothing to talk about."

"I think we do." She stares at the fire. "I was wrong. About you. About everything."

I wait for the punchline but she just sits there looking miserable.

"Is this a joke?" I finally ask.
