There's nothing better than knowing you did your best even when a situation was hard, you managed to pull through it and get the job done. There were times when you wanted to give up, but you didn't, that's the moments in life that make everything you do so rewarding. That’s what my grandfather would always tell me, whenever I asked why he did the job he did. His job would wear him down to the point of breaking, but he never did. Whenever I feel myself also hitting that breaking point, that saying always rings in my head.
"Were you trying to kill us?! You took that corner way too fast!" Alfie shouts slamming the car door as he got out, I guess my peaceful time of reflection is gone.
"I weren't going that fast and maybe if you didn't ramble about random shit the whole way home, I wouldn't have wanted the journey to go faster!" Chase replies also shouting, they both begin to have a screaming match facing off to each other.
I take a look to Tubbs who was rolling his eyes at the guys, honestly, these two are always at each other’s throat. I climb out of the car walking to stand in front of the guys, we’d spent a lot of time with each other recently. I’ve had enough of their arguments.
"Alright listen up, you did well on this job guys, it just goes to show how when we work as team, amazing things happen." I smile standing in front of my team, thankfully it stops Chase and Alfie fighting for a few seconds "now go spend some well-deserved time with your families, I'll see you back here in a few days" I smile looking at them all before turning to walk into the building.
I hear a series of goodbyes as I walk into the building, which does make a smile fill my lips. They can be annoying at times, but when it comes down to it, I wouldn’t want to be in any other team.
My family run W.P.A, it stands for Werewolf Protection Agency. If a pack feels like it's in danger, whether that be by other packs, rouges or hunters they call us. One of our highly trained teams stays with the pack for however long it takes for the problem to be solved, it doesn't matter how long it takes we stay there. My team and I have just got back from a pack where we were stationed for two years. The pack had a problem with its defences which made it a perfect target, we went over updated their security, properly trained its fighters and fixed its relationships with other packs. It was a big job, but we did, we have a little break and than it's back onto the next one.
When we first arrive, they're pretty confused, they don't understand why a bunch of humans are showing up to help them. That is until they see how highly trained, we are and could probably take their whole pack down in a few minutes. Most of the people who work here are human, we have maybe two teams which are werewolves. We don’t tell the human agents about werewolves first, after they’re done with basic training, and we know they’re good enough to be an agent here or we trust them. That is the moment we tell them about who we actually protect and why, you won’t believe some of the reactions we’ve gotten from people who find out on the spot.
I walk through the building heading towards my father’s office, he's the boss of this whole operation that was actually started by my great great grandfather, the one I spoke about before. When he was young, he took a walk through the woods not thinking anything dangerous would be waiting for him, a rouge wolf lunges and attacks him. He would have been a goner if it wasn't for a werewolf, she managed to take the wolf down saving my grandfather. It took him a few months to recover but when he was finally ready to go and thank the kind wolf who saved him, he discovered the whole pack had been hunted and murdered by hunters. He swore from that day on he was gonna make it his mission to help any pack who needed it, so he made the W.P.A and the rest is history.
I finally reach my fathers office where I could hear him shouting, from the things I was hearing the person he was shouting at disrespected an Alpha and caused a huge fight between our agents and the pack. That must have been a horrible experience, I’m glad I wasn’t there. The door soon flies open a new recruit running out, he bolts down the hall quite quickly away from the office. I take slow steps towards the open door, where my dad was looking out the window with his arms crossed.
"Permission to enter?" I ask with smile; he immediately turns his head looking at me standing in the doorway.
"Permission granted" he smiles, I roll my eyes walking in making sure to close the door behind me.
Once the door was fully closed, I'm wrapped in a tight hug, we haven't saw each other since I left to help the pack. When I'm on a job I tend not to contact anyone outside what I'm doing, I have to make sure my heads in the game to get the job down quickly but right. Talking with my father, would only urge me to complete the job faster which could mean I overlook a few important points and not help the pack to my full ability.
"You look more like your mother everyday" he smiles pulling away, I just send him a little smile back looking to the ground "she'd be so proud of you" he smiles his hand resting on my shoulder as he spoke, I just shake my head with a smile wanting to change the topic.
"I see some of the newer recruits are still ironing out problems" I say walking around the office, successfully rerouting the conversation "I can get my guys to try and help" I suggest looking back at him, while the team waits for another job to come up, it'll be good to get them back to basics and help.
"I think the trainers have got it covered, also I have another task your team needs to take a look at" he says walking over to his desk, picking up a file as he went "talking about your team, the Alpha of from the pack you just helped rang, he told me how great your team were and the way his packs runs has just changed for the better" he smiles opening up the folder, the Alpha did tell me he wanted to call my boss and tell him how it all went.
"My team did a good job, now if you tell me what the task is I can debrief them before they head home" I say about to walk forward to take the folder, but he shakes his head stopping me.
"I'll explain to you all at the same time, get your team waiting down at the front and I'll be there in a few" he instructs me acting a little suspicious, I just nod turning around opening the door "oh and Alaia, I've missed you" he smiles before I could leave, I smile still facing the door.
"I've missed you too dad" I smile before leaving closing the door behind me, I had to rush outside before the guys left.
I just made it outside before they could fully get into their cars.
"Hey guys wait, my dad wants a word with you all before you leave" I tell them running over, they all listen getting out their cars calmly, well apart from Alfie, who looked panicked a little.
"What does he want to talk to us about?" He asks me looking worried, I just shrug my shoulders simply "oh no this is bad, what if we're all gonna get fired and that's why he hasn't told you, so we all done flip out before he gets here" he panics walking around, the others just roll their eyes at him.
Alfie is definitely the worrier of the group; he tends to overthink situations. Apart from that, he is one of the best agents we have here. Since he joined the team just before we were sent to the last job, as a team we have been trying to help him get over it. He’s much better than he was when he joined that’s for sure.
"Why would he fire any of us Alfie? We're the best team here just calm it" Jeff says patting him on the back, Alfie just nods shaking his arms and legs but quickly stands up straight with his arms by his sides.
This tells me my dads is making his way over, as he's the boss they all have to stand up straight until he tells them otherwise, it's a respect sort of thing. As I’m the boss of my team, I don’t have to. Also, he tells me as I’m his daughter I don’t have to stand up straight.
"Stand down" he says stopping to stand beside me, the guys relax a little but still hold their hands behind their backs "now as Miss Buckwood has probably already told you, I need your help. Now I know you've just returned from a two-year job but this one is of urgency" he tells us looking at the guys, I even have to look over shocked, not even I knew it was another job.
"Permission to speak sir" Joey asks his face still straight looking over at my father, they also have to ask permission to speak when my father is giving them orders.
"Permission granted" my father says holding the folder tightly, that must hold whatever information about this task we're doing, I wanted nothing more than to read through it.
"With respect sir, we have just got back from a two-year long mission, we haven't had time to see our families yet, is there another team who could help you?" Joey asks talking for the team, I send him a smile knowing he must have been nervous to ask that question.
"I'll level with you, there are many different teams I could call to this job, but you're my best team, we're not just dealing with rouges or other packs" my father starts but stops for a second letting out a sigh, that doesn't make me feel good about this situation"this one involves hunters" he says which immediately makes my heart sink, they're the worst kind of people.
"Then sir, I retract what I just said" Joey says with a nod, we all know what hunters are like and we've had the most experiences with them.
"Thank you, now I got a call from the Alpha of The Luna moon pack last night, he told me a few of his pack members have fell victim to traps set by the hunters, one being a child" he starts while opening the file, the traps some hunters set can kill a werewolf in seconds or hours, it really depends how messed up the people are, if they lace it with silver it'll be while.
"Your team came to my mind instantly, as you've got the skills to take these men down, I was about to pull you off your previous case but then I got word you were heading back today" he says smiling down at me, I just look down nodding knowing what kind of case this was about to get turned into.
"Alright guys, this isn't gonna be easy I mean we've dealt with hunter cases before and we know how some turned out, if you feel like you can't do this one than it's perfectly fine, you can leave now" I tell them knowing that was something I had to say, but I also knew what reply I'd get.
"No boss, we're all good and ready to take these bastards down" Tubbs says talking for the team, I just smile looking towards my father who hands me the case file.
"Be careful and keep me updated this time, good luck to all of you but I know it's not you guys who's gonna need that luck" he smiles at us, I just laugh agreeing with him before he fully walks away.
"Let's do this" I smile at the guys who start to clap and run over to the big truck we take for jobs "Chase take the wheel" I smile throwing the keys to him, Alfie looks over at me looking rather distraught but gets in the truck anyway.
I knew this case was gonna be different but didn't understand how life changing this next job would be for me.
