One week later

“A week,” one of the maids says as she brushes past me in the hallway. “Can you believe it’s already been seven days since she got here?”

She’s whispering to another maid, but she wants me to hear it. They all do. Every word lately is designed to scratch at my skin like thorns.

“She’s so pretty,” the second one replies, louder. “And the Alpha actually lets her touch him.”

I pause, staring at the flowers in a vase like they’re the most interesting thing I’ve ever seen. But inside, my ears burn.
