Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Emma

" Emma, it's time for breakfast. Your parents are waiting for you outside." My personal maid Fiona informs me.

"I'll be down in a minute." I smile sweetly at her and she returns the gesture.

Fiona is a wonderful woman and her daughter Penelope is my best friend because she the only friend I've ever had in my life.

I take a quick look at myself in the mirror and check my attire , making sure it's decent and beautiful. Feeling happy with what I see , I proceed to the back yard .

I find my parents already at the table and I join them with greetings.

The food looks delicious and mouthwatering , we have the best chefs in town who work for us , hence the delicious food.

"Emma , now that you've graduated from high school what are your plans for the future? Career wise of course." Father asks .

"Well since I like to read and write stories I was thinking of something like being an editor or author in a publishing company." I respond enthusiastically .

My parents exchange unimpressed glances before focusing on me once more.

"And in what genre of stories are you most interested in ?" Mom asks this time.

"Romance!" I say a bit too loudly in excitement. If my parents agree then that will be a dream come true.

"It's quite disappointing that you would choose such a career. Your father and I have set a very good example for you and have shown you the right path to follow. Why would you choose something like that?" Mom isn't happy about my choice.

"Because it's my dream, my passion." I murmur , almost like whisper.

My parents are business people and they want me to pursue a business course so that once they retire I can take over the business.

"How about we talk about this another time and just enjoy this amazing breakfast for now." Father interrupts before this grows into an argument.

"Of course my love." Mom smiles and exchange kisses with dad.

Love?

How do you know when you're in love? How does it feel? Yes I've read a number of books and they talk about feeling butterflies in your belly when you meet that special someone. But I also know stories can be exaggerated for more entertainment and find that reality is far from that.

I finish my breakfast and excuse myself.

"Today is Monday, meaning no going out or inviting friends over. You'll stay here and spend time with your family ."

"Of course mother."

Well from that I'm sure you now understand what my life is like. My parents are over protective and controlling. All my life I've been told what to do and what not to do.

When it was time to start school, I was given a bodyguard which meant no associating with the other kids , especially boys.

They say they are protecting me from the cruelty of this world , but how will I learn to be independent if they're always doing everything for me?

How will I know to be strong and fight for what I want in life if they keep fighting for me?

How will I know to face my fears and the troubles of this life if my path has already been decided for me?

They forget that life is not forever, they will soon leave me then what ?
