I have imagined this moment in many different ways over many different months. In some versions of it, I felt triumphant, bright and clean and vindicated in the way that justice is supposed to feel when it finally arrives. In other versions, darker ones, the ones that visited me at three in the morning when I couldn’t sleep and my mind went to uncomfortable places, I felt nothing at all, just a vast, exhausted emptiness where the satisfaction was supposed to be. I had imagined crying. I had imagined laughing. I had imagined feeling righteous and certain and completely sure of myself.
