The night that follows the end of something is never as clean as you expect it to be. I had anticipated collapse, the good kind, the kind that comes when your body finally releases the tension it has been holding for so long that you forgot it was holding it. I had anticipated sleep, deep and uninterrupted, the sleep of someone who has been carrying a weight and has finally set it down in a permanent place. I had anticipated waking up in the morning feeling different, lighter, free, done.
