TESSA POV

"Please welcome our President!"

The words hadn't even finished leaving the announcer's mouth before the hall erupted, a wall of sound that rattled up through the soles of my shoes.

I stood just off the edge of the stage, watching Malcolm walk toward the podium under lights bright enough to catch on every silver thread in his coat, and for one strange, suspended second I was back in that first classroom a year ago, watching him wheel through a doorway while a room full of strangers whispered about how handsome the new professor was.

He wasn't in a wheelchair now. He didn't need one....
