Chapter 5

Chapter 5

My view ahead of us seems to be transparent as we walked back to our building. Like the ocean waves, my mind has no specific direction as it moves. It's only carried by the calm but dangerous wind. And that wind is no other than Daniel.

I took a deep breath, looked down and watched my feet as I make steps. Sunlight was hitting my legs every time I move. I can hear soft mutterings behind us but my mind seems to be inside a deep thought.

"Maybe Daniel is already making peace with you, Cheska?" Bryle said when Daniel got up and went to the counter.

I was still staring at the bottle of water he handed me, my heart beating so fast that I couldn't understand why. There's something in my stomach that feels strange. It's like something is spinning ... it's like something is tickling me.

"It's all right. He's being harsh to Cheska! Our friend here isn't doing anything to him." Camille groaned.

"Hmm. Makes me also wonder why he's being like that. With that kind of beauty, it's suprising that you couldn't steal his attention. That man is a sucker for pretty faces and fair as dove complexion."

"He said that Cheska doesn't have the appeal for him! It's probably the reason why." said Amanda.

"Tss. Appeal my ass! Cheska here got everything. Brain and beauty and even the appeal is fucking oozing."

I simply turned to Daniel’s direction. He's standing on the edge of the counter, holding a bottle of water while paying. Like a magnet to a steel, he bore his perilous eyes into mine and that made me hold my breath for a brief moment. Our eyes locked with each other, as if there's a line of electricity passing through our gaze.

I let out a sigh again. From my feet, I lifted my eyes and looked at the bottle of water. I don't know what's gotten into my head that I still bring this water with me. I never bring things or food with me after eating on the cafeteria.

I just thought that it'd be a waste throwing it even if it's not empty.

"Are you okay, Ches? You're quiet." Camille gently bumped my shoulder.

Amanda let out a giggle. I turned to her. From her smirking face, her eyes went to my hand and glanced longer at the bottled water. The grin widened on his lips. I grimaced because I already knew what that smile was for.

"I'm always quiet ..." I said between the manly chuckles behind us. The varsity followed us and accompanied us because we have the same building to go to.

"Really, Ches?" Amanda taunted. Camille seems to be oblivious behind that question from our wild friend.

I winked at her which ended ud laughing.

"Girls, we'll go ahead of you."

We looked back when one of the team spoke. They're all looking at us with a smug smile on their faces.

"You're not coming in yet?" Amanda asked.

"There's a quick meeting at the gym. The coach is calling us." Bryle replied, his gaze was on me.

"Where's Daniel, Bryle? Call him."

"Yeah. Where did he go? He suddenly disappeared earlier."

"Crisanta texted him. Maybe they'll meet. I'll text him."

"We'll go ahead. Our class is about to start." said Amanda before looking at me. "Let's go?"

I nodded and glanced at the men in front of us. "We'll go ahead."

"Sure. Take care, Cheska."

"Take care, Ches." some of them said in chorus..

The team waved their hands before finally leaving. We also turned around and continued walking towards the building.

"It's really hard when we're with Cheska. My beauty isn't working." Amanda laughed.

I turned to her and pouted my lips. "So, you don't want to be with me anymore?"

She glanced at me. The smile on her face grew wider and even stuck her tongue out. "I won't trade our friendship just because you're prettier than me. Love you, friend!"

I smiled at them and shook my head. I turned my gaze back to the road and let a sweet smile cover my lips. Amanda had a kind of brutal honesty that tested our friendships, but I appreciated it. I always knew where I stood with her and despite her brutality, she always made me feel her genuine care for me.

"You go up first. I'll just go to the comfort room." I said as we were on the opposite side of the stairs to our building.

The two looked at me.

"Hurry up, hmm. Our next subject is about to start." Camille reminded.

"Yes, I'll just pee."

The two nodded and continued climbing. I followed that and walked to the bathroom. The smell of citrus and flowers invaded my nostril the moment I stepped my feet into the white tiled floor. The cold air coming from the air conditioner kisses my skin that caused me to shudder.

As I ambled near the sink where a rectangular mirror was hanging, I noticed that some of my hair were already not in their proper place.

"Why are you doing this? I thought you love me?"

My steps were suddenly interrupted when I heard that voice. I turned around, specifically in the cubicles. All doors are closed.

Is it here?

"Love?" A husky voice chuckled. "Are you fucking kidding me?"

It's another four seconds before I realized that I was hearing a male voice. My eyes widened dramatically.

Oh, God! There is someone inside the cubicle. A woman and ... a man!

"We've been in a relationship for a month! You always drive me home and we're always together. Don't tell me you didn't love me?"

"For a month. Not a year. You know how I hate commitments. I have never involved myself into a serious relationship. What made you think that you're an exception?"

My eyes widened even more when I heard the slap on the cheek. I stepped forward but was also immediately startled when I heard the woman sobbing hysterically. If my conclusion is correct, the man is breaking up with her but she doesn't want to.

But wait, why are they talking here? Can't they find another place? Somewhere private so that no one will hear.

"Asshole! You're fucking helpless! I bet you don't even know how to love!" the woman's voice cracked, the intense crying was obvious.

The man let out an audible smirk. It's the sound of smirk that will tell you that he's not the gentle type of man. Instead, he's harsh, cruel and frigid.

"I know how. The thing is you won't be able to experience it from me. I can let my girl treat me as her personal slave if she wants to. Too bad I couldn't give you that privilege ..." he chuckled coldly. "Thanks for the good fuck, Crisanta."

My lips parted. C-Crisanta? Crisanta as in ... Daniel's girlfriend? It means that the one with her inside the cubicle is ...

The door opened. I stiffened when our eyes met. His eyes rounded a bit at my sudden presence. Just before I could name the emotion on them, he immediately shut it and walked out of the comfort room.

I was left for a long time and had nothing to say. Crisanta came out next, her eyes were swollen and her nose almost as red as a tomato. She was momentarily stunned when she saw me standing not far from her, dumbfounded and not knowing what to react to.

She rolled her puffy eyes at me and walked out of the room. She's stomping her heels so bad that it created loud echoes against the four corners of the comfort room.

They're gone for almost a minute now but I'm still stuck in my position like my feet have been buried six feet underground.

Wait. What did just happen? It's Crisanta and Daniel, obviously breaking up. But why? Why did they break up?

That's definitely out of your concern, Mera Francheska. When have you ever give an interest about other people’s lives?

Why do I seem to be affected by their separation? I'm affected in a positive and happy way. But why is that?

I shut my eyes tight and tried to collect a calm breathing. I exhaled and opened my eyes.

What is wrong with you, Cheska? What the hell is wrong with you?

I stayed in that position for a while before I peed. Eventually, I decided to tie my hair in a clean way. I fixed it into a high and tight pony tail that enhance my face feautures. The smallness of my heart -shaped forehead and the little diamond earrings in my ears looked elegant even more.

Sure that I already look fine, I walked out of the bathroom. I was about to turn left where the staircase is when I felt a gentle grip grab my arm.

"What!" I shouted as he turned me in front of him. My eyes rolled when I saw Daniel leaning against the wall where passersby are paying little attention. "Let me go! Why are you pulling me here?"

He didn't say anything. He just stared at me in the face as if he was studying it. I couldn’t help but feel intimidated because of the way he was staring. His eyes are bold, intimidating and dark.

"You eavesdropped?" he asked, voice so low and deep.

"What?"

"Did you listen to what we talked about?"

My eyebrows rose at his question. "It's a female comfort room, Mr. Arrogant. It's natural-"

"It's Daniel," he chuckled manlikely and I was suddenly amazed at the way his lips stretched into smile. "Not Mr. Arrogant."

"I-I know! But arrogant suits you better. And back to your question, I didn't mean to hear what you were talking about. If you had done that somewhere else, you don't have to worry that someone might have heard you."

He let go of my arm that I didn't even realize he was holding earlier! What, Ches? Are you that comfortable when he holds you and you don't even realize it?

"I am not bothered that you heard us. It's fine."

"Why do you sound so proud as if breaking up with her is just nothing? Didn't you love her?"

A ghost of smirk broke across his pinkish lips. At the same time he raised an eyebrow. "You care?"

I blinked. "W-What? Of course I don't! Why would I care for an arrogant and heartless man like you? It's just that your ex girlfriend looks pitiful."

I closed my eyes and shut it tightly. Damn you, Czech! You sounded so affected by their break up! And you're really making it obvious to this man.

Daniel let out an audible smirk that made me unlock my eyes. I looked down at him when I saw the teasing in his eyes.

"You do care, admit it." he tempted.

I glared at him. "I'm sorry but you are not worth my care."

The school bell rang. I looked outside and saw that the students were also in a hurry for the next class. I glanced at Daniel and found him staring intently at my face with a soft smirk etched on his lips. I stared at him once more and walked towards the stairs.

"Ches ..." he called out.

I stopped walking and raised an eyebrow at him. "What?"

"Did I hurt your feelings?"

"What?" I asked, confused.

He drilled his perilous eyes into mine for a couple of seconds. He stood straight and tucked his hands in his pocket without taking his eyes off me. He walked slowly closer to me, my heart almost going crazy for no apparent reason.

When he's meters away from me, he stopped. We're so close that I can even smell his bubble-mint breath. I swallowed, unable to look directly at him.

"Bring your old uniform back. It suits you better. You don't have to change your style just because I said that you don't have the fucking appeal ..." he said. I held my breath as he leaned closer to my ear and whispered, "I am not a saint, Cheska. I also know how to lie."
