I never imagined it would get this bad. I had always recognized the stink of desperation in other people—weakness masquerading as resolve, begging masquerading as argument. I had previously used it against others, playing on their insecurities. It stuck to me like perfume now.
My hands were clenched into fists to prevent them from shaking as I stood outside the room. The packhouse was still recuperating from the struggle that had put Marcus back in charge, so the hallway was quieter than normal.
