Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Maeve had seen him laughing with those kids who had bullied her, earlier. And then he had watched from her afar with a straight facial expression on, as she got bullied by these his friends. But he didn't join them. He didn't even laugh when the other kids were calling her a fat cow, and an ugly witch. And when they spilled her milk, and left, he had come to lend her his. So she could stop crying. An act which was really nice and kind. Which proved that he was different from the rest, and friendly too.

Maeve stared at Leo, dumbfounded, and he pushed the milk into her hand. Waved her, then left to join his friends at the playground.

And this made her believe he wasn't as bad as she had thought. She was expecting him to call out to his friends that she had stolen his milk because she lost hers, but he didn't. He had proved her wrong.

Maeve could swear she had seen the boy Leo often times around the neighborhood, when she always escort her uncle Richard on an errand. Leo and his family were the new family who moved into a house which was next to hers. Her Grandpa's house had been rebuilt into a one storey. There wasn't even a fence. While Leo's family house was a nice looking bungalow. Much more better than hers. And she had seen Leo carrying his infant sister a couple of times. She had no idea that she would get enrolled in the school he was attending.

Maeve stood, blinking rapidly with the boy's milk in her hand. She didn't know why he had been nice to her. When other kids had made fun of her hair, and extremely fair skin. Maybe Leo had been nice to her, because they were neighbors, or he just felt pity for her. She didn't know.

She watched him play with his friends at the playground. Then thought about going to join him. When a voice in her head warned her not to, that she might not be welcomed there, because it was her first day at school, and she was already being disliked by her classmates. And it felt like they wouldn't even want her on the play ground with them. So Maeve decided not to go, even though Leo was there, she fought the urge to stay back.

Maeve blew out a breath, raised Leo's own milk to take a sip out of it. Again, fear started racing through her mind, with her wondering if he had pee inside. She just couldn't completely trust anyone. Something made her held the milk an inch away from her mouth. At first when the teacher had introduced her to her classmates, the girl at her side had smile and acted all friendly. And when Maeve asked the girl if they could be friends, the girl had given her a blunt no, and told her she was fat and stupid. That was how the rest of the class started calling her names. And this had broken Maeve's heart. Then the bullying began.

Maeve blew out another breath, then took a sip from the milk. And the milk had taste just fine.

And the fact that Leo was nice to her, had made her develop a tiny crush on him, there and then.

She could feel a smile forming on her face, as she drank from the milk carton. Not everyone hated her. At least someone had been nice to her on her first day at school.

During closing hours on that day, Leo had walk up to her, his hands on the straps of his back pack, with a huge cute smile on his face.

"See you, tommorow." Was what he told her, with a pat on her shoulder. Then he turned and ran away, and went into his dad's car. Then waved her good bye before closing the car door.

While Maeve stood, staring at the car dumbfounded, as it drove away. With her uncle Richard standing at her side, with a smile on his face. They were waiting for her grandpa to come pick them up a that time.

And Maeve could feel a smile on her face too. She waved back, despite the car was almost getting out of her sight. But she was suddenly feeling so happy on the inside, and couldn't hide the excitement anymore.

The boy had been nice enough to console her, and generous enough offer her his own milk, when she was crying over getting bullied, and her spilled milk during lunch break. And then, he had pat on the shoulder with a smile on his face and told her goodbye during closing hours.

Then, she began seeing him often. But was too shy to speak with him. Even when he tried talking to her, she always hid her face between her palms. He was quite popular, because he caught up with everything so fast.

He even lived on the same street with her, his house was only a few blocks away from hers. Yet, she was too chicken to have a conversation with him. Even when he smiled and waved at her, she would quickly look away from him, feeling shy. And scared that she was going to embarrass herself in front of him.

On several occasions, when they had met with at the grocery store, she had refused to talk to him, even when Leo's mom

had urged them to talk to themselves, so they could be friends, since they attended the same school. And lived on the same neighborhood. The boy wanted to create a conversation, but Maeve had ran away, with her palms covering her face.

She couldn't help feeling embarrassed that Leo wanted to talk to her.

This made her bump into something because she was running away with her hands covering her face, and she fell flat on the floor.

She was being picked up by her scared looking uncle Richard, and this made her stared down at the floor in embarrassment. Because she knew he had seen all of this, and she had made a fool of herself. Despite being four years old, she knew all of this.
