Chapter 6

Chapter 6

The second time he helped her again, was when they were both five. She was about eating her lunch of spaghetti and boiled eggs, when a kid who was running around with his friends, accidentally knock her food down, off her desk.

She had burst into a full volume of wails, at this. And the other kids laughed and pointed fingers at her. Because the food was right on the floor, in front of her. Even the teacher just soothed her, told a cleaner to cone clean the dirt, and left her.

Meanwhile Maeve was having an empty stomach, with the worms doing a battle, making growling sounds.

She didn't even want to go meet her Uncle Richard, because she knew he would eat his own food as well. So she didn't want to be a bother, and decided to stay on her seat. Feeling really sad about the food she just lost. She could recall when she had anticipate eating the meal, right from the moment it was being put in the flask by her uncle Richard.

Maeve watched as the other kids are their food, and began salivating. Until Leo came to her sit, with his flask of food, then placed it untop of her desk.

Maeve stared at him, dumbfounded. Wondering what he was up to, as she eyed the flask. Leo opened the lid of the flask, and the sweet smelling aroma accompanied with white puffs of smoke, made Maeve even hungrier. That she began taking gulps.

She stared into the flask and saw a big chunk of chicken, and hot dogs inside the sauce, untop of the plain rice.

Until Leo closed the food, and she was forced to look up at him.

"You can eat my food with me." Leo had offer. And Maeve shook her head no, before looking away from him. She was still too chicken to speak to him, or form a word. She always seem to suddenly go dumb whenever he was close by. Not that she talked much in class anyway. She preferred staying silent, because no one still liked her.

"You should eat. There's no need to be shy, okay?" Leo persisted, and then sat on the empty space next to her, before shoving his spoon into her hand, and then carried a fork.

Maeve knew at this moment, that she couldn't reject Leo's offer anymore. The aroma of the food was too good. And when she ate a mouthful, she couldn't stop eating. The food even tasted better than her uncle Richard's own. Much more better. That she ate like a starved little child. However, Leo didn't mind. When they finally got to the chicken, he told her she could have it all. And she had nodded feeling grateful for his act of kindness. She had eaten to her satisfaction, and was grateful Leo came to her aid.

She gave him a grateful smile, something which he also returned. And Maeve hid her face between her palms out of embarrassment. She had shared Leo's food with him.

The third time Leo had helped Maeve again, was when they were both six years old. And Maeve was trying to sing in front of the whole class, because students were to sing during music class.

Other kids had sang when it was their turn, and were rewarded with a round of applause by the rest of the kids. And Maeve was waiting impatiently for her turn. With anticipation kicking right through her, that she was going to sing in front of the whole class. And maybe when they listen to her as she sing with her voice, which she thought was amazing, then they would bully her less.

Maeve was feeling so giddy on the inside. Almost bouncing on her seat, from excitement. Finally feeling that, that day would be a good day to her. And maybe she could talk finally talk to Leo. And play with him on the play ground as well. Because she could still remember his act of kindness towards her. How he had offered her his own milk, when she was crying over her own spilled milk. They were both four at that time. And when he had told her to share his food with him, because her food got spilled on the floor. And then, Leo had told her to eat his very big chunk of chicken.

Maeve thought about all these, as the rest of her classmates sang. She snapped her head to look at Leo's direction. And when he had turned to meet her eyes, she quickly looked away out of the embarrassment of getting caught. With her cheeks suddenly getting flushed. And then she hid her face between her palm. Because she was just too shy about the fact that she was looking at Leo, and he caught her right at that moment. As if sensing she was going to look at him.

And when it was Maeve's turn to go sing the whole class had fallen silent as they waited for her to sing.

Maeve was feeling a little bit too nervous, and couldn't get the first few lines of her song correct. She was stammering when her eyes immediately met Leo, who was watching her with interest.
