Chapter 6 Six

Chapter 6 Six

Lisa sat in stunned silence, the weight of the man's revelation hanging heavy in the air. Her father, alive? After all these years of believing he had perished, the news was almost too much to bear.

"You're mistaken," she managed, her voice trembling. "My father died years ago in the pack."

The man's eyes narrowed, a flicker of pain crossing his weathered features. "No, child. It was I who was banished, cast out by the pack elders for daring to love an outsider."

Lisa's mind reeled, memories of her childhood resurfacing in fragmented pieces. "I... I don't understand."

Reaching out, the man placed a calloused hand on her arm, his touch gentle yet firm. "There is much you don't know, Lisa. But I swear on my life, I am your father, Samuel Brute."

As the reality of his words sank in, Lisa fought back a wave of emotion, her son's soft cries grounding her in the present moment. Cradling the babe close, she met her father's gaze with a newfound determination.

"If what you say is true, then you must help me," she pleaded. "Draco cannot find us – he'll take my son away, just as he did with my firstborn."

Samuel's brow furrowed, concern etched into his features. "Draco? The pack leader?"

Lisa nodded, her grip on her son tightening instinctively. "He believes I poisoned his father, and he has turned the entire pack against me. I had to escape, for my child's safety."

A heavy silence hung between them, broken only by the crackling of the fire. Finally, Samuel spoke, his voice laced with determination.

"Then we must leave, tonight. I know of a place where we can find sanctuary, at least for a while."

Lisa's heart leapt with hope, a fragile sense of relief washing over her. As she gathered her meager belongings, a sudden thought struck her, a knot of worry forming in her stomach.

What if Draco had already discovered her disappearance?

Draco paced the length of the study, his mind a whirlwind of anger and disbelief. How could Lisa have fled, taking his child with her? The audacity of her actions was almost unfathomable.

A sharp rap on the door broke his heated reverie, and Vivian swept into the room, her every movement exuding a calculated grace.

"Draco," she purred, her gaze sweeping over him with undisguised hunger. "I've just heard the news. Lisa has escaped."

Draco's jaw clenched, his hands balling into fists at his sides. "Indeed," he growled. "The foolish woman thinks she can outrun me."

Vivian's lips curved into a saccharine smile, her eyes glittering with malice. "Shall I gather the hunters? We can track her down, bring her back to face justice."

For a moment, Draco was tempted by the offer, the desire for vengeance burning hot within him. But a nagging voice in the back of his mind gave him pause. What if Lisa had fled to protect their son?

Schooling his features into a mask of indifference, he met Vivian's gaze with steely resolve. "No. Let her run for now. She cannot hide from me forever."

Vivian's smile faltered, disappointment flickering across her features before she regained her composure. "As you wish, Alpha."

As she turned to leave, Draco's eyes narrowed, a sudden realization striking him like a bolt of lightning.

Vivian had been all too eager to hunt Lisa down – almost as if she had been anticipating this moment.

Could it be that she had played a role in Lisa's supposed betrayal? The thought sent a chill down Draco's spine, suspicion taking root in his mind.

He would get to the bottom of this, one way or another. And if Vivian was involved, she would face the full consequences of her actions.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Draco strode from the study, his footsteps echoing like a promise of retribution to come.

The night seemed to stretch on endlessly as Lisa huddled close to the crackling fire, her son nestled protectively in her arms. Every creak and groan of the old house set her nerves on edge, her mind conjuring visions of Draco bursting through the door at any moment.

Samuel had gone to make preparations for their journey, leaving Lisa alone with only her swirling thoughts for company. She found herself revisiting the memories of her life in the pack – the good times intermingled with the bad in a dizzying swirl of emotions.

Had she made a terrible mistake in fleeing? What if Draco truly believed her innocence, deep down? The doubts gnawed at her resolve, her weariness from the day's events threatening to overwhelm her.

A loud thump from outside jolted Lisa from her reverie, her heart leaping into her throat. Instinctively, she drew her son closer, peering into the inky blackness beyond the window with bated breath.

"Lisa?" Samuel's gruff voice cut through the silence, and she exhaled shakily, relief flooding her. "We must move, now."

Gathering her scant belongings, Lisa followed her newfound father into the night, the weight of uncertainty bearing down upon her with every step. Where were they going? And what awaited them when they arrived?

The crunch of their footsteps seemed deafening in the stillness, the chirping of crickets their only accompaniment. Lisa strained her senses, searching for any sign of pursuit, of Draco's wrathful presence closing in.

Just as the first hints of dawn began to paint the sky in muted hues, they arrived at a ramshackle cabin nestled deep in the heart of the forest. Samuel ushered her inside, bolting the door behind them with a finality that sent a shiver down Lisa's spine.

"We should be safe here, for a time," he assured her, though the tightness around his eyes betrayed his unease.

Lisa nodded, too drained to muster a response. As she settled onto the musty bedding, cradling her son close, she couldn't shake the feeling that their troubles were only just beginning.

For in the shadows, a pair of gleaming eyes watched their every move, a silent sentinel biding its time.

And back at the pack's compound, Draco was just beginning to unravel the web of lies and deceit that had ensnared them all.
