Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Finally! The day is over and I can go to my bed. I closed the door behind me and headed to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

"Hey Rose." She jumped almost dropping the bowl she was carrying.

"Kyla" she breathed. "You scared me." That's weird, Rose isn't the scaredy cat type. She's always attentive.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to." I closed the fridge and went closer to her. "Are you okay?" She nodded but I didn't believe it. She seemed nervous.

"Yeah I'm okay. How was school?" I finished drinking my water.

"Good. Let me go and change." Maybe when I come back she'll be ready to tell me what is going on with her.

"Kyla wait. You have a visitor." I frowned.

"Who? Grandpa?"

"No but the visitor is in the study. I'll take your bag you go see him." She took my bag and rushed out.

I walked to the study and was met by a familiar face.

"Ronald?" I closed the door behind me after getting in.

"Miss Davison finally you're here." He stood up and gave me a hug. He is the family lawyer. He was always so formal when addressing me.

"What are you doing here?" He motioned for me to sit and that's when I realised the man next to him.

His silky rich ink black hair cut short and combed neatly made him look smarter with the black Armani suit he wore. His clean shaved face weirdly reminded me of dad. He must also be a businessman but what is doing here? And who is he?

I couldn't help this weird feeling of him being familiar. Have we met? Or maybe he was a friend of dad's? He looked too young to be his friend though. He looked like he was in his mid twenties or something. Maybe I saw him in the funeral. I was face down all the time so I don't remember anyone who attended and most of them were business people they worked with. I tried to think of where else I could have seen him but no luck.

"Miss Davison the Will hasn't been read yet. It's time it was read." Oh that. I had forgotten about it.

"Okay but shouldn't that be a private thing to do?" I looked at the stranger in the room. He just stared at me blankly, with no emotions whatsoever. There's no way I'm going to guess what is going through his head.

"Oh this is Caleb. He needs to be here don't worry you'll understand once we start." I frowned and looked at him again but he was looking away now.

What is going on here?

"Well let's start because I'm so confused right now." He sighed.

"Rose and Jerry, they're needed as well." I texted Rose to come over with Jerry and two minutes later they arrived.

"Okay since everyone is here we'll start. I'll start by saying I'm really sorry about the loss Miss Davison." I nodded and he continued. "This is the last Will and Testament of....."

He went on and started reading the Will which mentioned that almost everything was left for me. Of course for now since I was under eighteen I couldn't access anything without grandpa but in six months I'd be free. I'd legally own what my parents had, including the house, a few other properties, thirty five percent of the company shares although I asked myself where the other thirty-five went to because mom once told me they owned thirty five each and the rest were shared amongst other share holders.

Maybe Ronald was yet to read about that. So I listened further to Ronald attentively.

I was so proud of mom and dad when I heard Ronald read that Rose and Jerry would be given some money as a token of appreciation for their loyal services and they could keep their jobs the company will pay them.

Something about a certain confession they didn't make when they were still alive got my attention again.

"Kyla our lovely daughter we hope you forgive us for what you're about to discover." Ronald read the last part then raised his head to look at me. "Miss Davison you are to watch this before I proceed with the Will." He pulled out a flash from his briefcase. I grabbed it slowly scared at what it might contain.

I went to sit behind dad's desk and plugged in the flash in the desktop in front of me. The only thing saved in it was a video. So I opened it and I saw my parents.

"Hey Honey" dad waved smiling. Gosh it was as if they were still alive just on a business trip or something.

"Hey baby" mom waved as well smiling, her smile always made me smile and I found myself giggling and letting a tear roll down.

"Princess if we're watching this then death came for us before we could do right by you. You're not supposed to watch this if we're still alive or if one of us is still living.

Um Kyla I know you're wondering why Caleb is there with you well he's supposed to be because I have something to confess. When I was in college I had a girlfriend but we separated when she left for Cuba to further her studies. What I didn't know was she left with my son." My heart dropped when I heard the word son.

What?

"Honey" mom started when dad couldn't find the words to continue. His eyes were now wet. "Your father only found out a few months ago. Well we both did cause um the first thing he did when Laura called him, Laura is Caleb's mom by the way. So when she called he came to me confused and I appreciated that he was very honest with me." They held hands and dad continued.

"She was sick when she called. She's always had a heart condition so it was then that when we went to see her I saw my son. That was the first time I did and the last day Laura lived." I looked at Caleb and hurt was all over his face. He was trying not to break down but I could see it in his eyes that he missed his mom so much.

"Caleb is really your brother Kyla. Yes I'm not proud of how I'm telling you this like this if you are watching but I hope you don't watch this and I find the courage to tell you in person one day.

Caleb is a nice man he was raised well I trust him to take care of you. I know you two will get along. I love you my little princess. Take care of yourself." The video stopped playing and I wiped my tears slowly.

So I have a brother and no one bothered to tell me? I couldn't believe my own eyes and ears for a few minutes. Was this some kind of joke cause I wasn't finding it funny?

"Miss Davison" I looked at Ronald while taking out the flash and putting it in my pocket. "I'm sure you already know your grandfather Mr Thomas Davison vowed to only visit the manor and not reside." I nodded. "So he can't stay with you here."

"Anything else?" I asked. I needed to be alone right now.

"Yes." He looked at the piece of paper and further read. "My twenty-five percent shares are to be my son Caleb's. I also leave him a condo in the Bahamas and half of the money in the bank under my name. You're both getting half each." He paused to look at me.

"That's it?" I asked. He shook his head and he went on.

"Mr Caleb here will be moving in here as per your father's condition on taking over the company as the new CEO. Mr C Davison here is very familiar with the business world and that was your father's request. He did it in writing too if you'd like to verify." He opened the next page to show me but I refused.

"I don't have to. He knew I wasn't into businesses, companies or whatever. I appreciate I'm not expected to take over." Caleb looked at me warily not believing what he just heard.

"Very well Miss Davison that is the end of the Will." I nodded.

"Thank you for coming Ronald." I went over to shake his hand. "Drive safely when you leave." I turned to Rose. "I'll be in my room." I walked to the door but stopped before I could open the door. I took a deep breath then turned and looked at my half brother.

"Welcome to the Davison's mansion Caleb."

...

"Kyla?" Rose peeped her head in the door. "Can I come in?" I nodded and she did. "Kyla you have to eat something." I turned to the window in front of me.

"I'm not hungry." I heard Rose coming closer until she was next to me. "Did you know?" She sat next to me and sighed heavily.

"Yes. I had never seen him but your mom came to me because she saw me as more than an employee but a friend too. Hiding something like this from you was very difficult to her so she needed someone to talk to." Right so everyone knew and I was the clueless one.

"I see." I got up and sat on the bed opening my book.

"Kyla I'm sorry. It wasn't my place to say anything." She's right.

"I'm not angry at you Rose I just wanted to be alone. Finding out you have a brother at this age isn't something to digest easily."

"I understand but can you at least eat? Please." Please.

"You won't take no for an answer won't you?" She giggled shaking her head. "Fine I'll eat."

"Thank you. I'll go get your food."

...

My alarm went off and I silenced it then continued to study. I was already up and had taken a bath because I had a nightmare and usually a bath or shower helps me calm down but today instead of going back to bed I decided to study.

Good morning Kyla.

I closed my books and sighed.

Did you know?

Of course but it wasn't my place to tell you either. I don't think you would have believed me anyway.

So I was really the only clueless one in this family? How great.

Kyla

Her pleading voice echoed in my ears but I chose to ignore it and get ready for school. I was super early today but I dressed anyway. I walked to the kitchen and Rose was already up.

"Good morning sweetie. You're up early today." I grabbed a bowl in the cupboard.

"Morning Rose. I'll have cereal today don't bother yourself." I took a carton and made myself breakfast then ate in silence by the counter. I appreciated Rose not trying to bother me cause I really wasn't in the mood.

"Good morning ladies" his rich, velvety textured voice broke me from my trance. I realised that was the first time I heard Caleb speak. His voice was so familiar and I knew where he got it from. Why is everything about him reminding me of dad?

"Good morning Mr Davison" Rose greeted back.

"Please call me Caleb." At least he's polite.

I finished chewing and finally got a glance of him. He wore gym clothes and had sweat dripping from his forehead. He works out huh.

"Good morning." I finally said after what felt like an hour but it was about thirty seconds honestly. "I'm off to school." I announced and then got up.

...

"What?! You have a brother?"

"Yup" I answered still writing my homework.

"Ky you're not kidding are you?" Meg asked really shocked at what I just told her.

"Nope." I concentrated on my homework again.

"So did you guys talk?" I sighed and rolled my eyes.

Does your friend shut up?

Tell me about it.

When is she going to write her own homework instead of bombarding you with questions?

You know very well Meg doesn't like schoolwork Em.

"Ky!" I almost jumped when Meg shouted my name. "I am talking to you, what happened?" I closed my notebook and looked at her.

"Megan I haven't had a conversation with him yet, just only 'good morning' this morning. And no I don't hate him or anything I just need to process what is going on at the moment. Things are moving too fast for me." She looked a little guilty for asking and the last bell rang.

"Can I come over this weekend? I think you need company after what you told me." No I don't.

"I'm sorry Meg, Caleb's aunt is coming over so I'm supposed to meet her." Gosh I hate lying. I'm sorry Meg I just wanna be alone.

"I thought you said you guys haven't talked." She's smart.

"Rose asked if I'm okay with her coming over before I left. That's how I know." You are such a great liar now.

I guess it runs in the family Em.

We strolled to the school gate where my bus was already waiting for me.

"Bye Meg. I'll see you on Monday." I gave her a hug.

"Alright take care okay? I'll call you every day." I giggled.

"You should also study Meg, we're starting exams Monday." She frowned.

"You think I'll fail?"

"I'm just advising a friend." I chuckled while walking towards the bus.

Thank God it's Saturday tomorrow I'm just going to sleep all day.
