"Not going to the mall like other teenage girls do on Saturdays?" I jumped and looked at where this voice was coming from. "I'm sorry I scared you I didn't mean to."
Caleb
"It's okay." I sat straight and looked at him. "What were you saying?" He came to sit next to me on the couch.
"I was asking if don't you go to the mall like other teenage girls do on Saturdays." I chuckled and shook my head.
"I have exams this week so I was studying" I pointed my books on the table. "And besides I'm just not in the best mood to be around people." He nodded.
"So not only is my little sister cute but smart and responsible." He smiled and I realised that was the first time I was seeing him smile.
Even his smile is like that of dad's.
"You think I'm cute?" He gasped sarcastically.
"You don't have a mirror in your room? I need to get someone to put one ASAP." I burst out laughing holding my stomach.
"You're really funny" he chortled and then looked at me for a while.
"Hey I'm sorry I wasn't introduced to you earlier. I understand if you're feeling betrayed, I felt the same way too when I found out my father was alive. Worse part is I couldn't be angry at my mom for lying about my father's existence cause I didn't want to have a horrible picture of us as the last picture of my mother in my memory."
"I'm sorry"
"Don't be it's not your fault." He said.
"So your mom never mentioned your father while you were growing up?" He sighed.
"She told me my father was from Cuba and died from a car accident. She never really liked talking about him so I decided to let it be but it kept on bugging me that I had a Davison last name and in Cuba there aren't really any Davisons." He explained. "When I was ten we moved back to America. California to be precise."
"To family? Your mother's side of the family I mean." I asked but he shook his head.
"My mother was an only child. My grandparents died when I was eight." My heart raced when I remembered I lied to Meg about Caleb's aunt.
"Oh." I muttered. The room was quiet for a good few minutes until he spoke again.
"I was just like you when I met our father you know. Quiet. I also wasn't sure if we'd get along or even how to start a conversation with him." He chuckled as if remembering those awkward days with dad.
"How did you know I wasn't sure abou-"
"You're easy to read Kid besides you remind me a lot about myself at your age." did he just call me Kid?
"No I think we're different." He crooked his eyebrow.
"How?"
"I'm cute and you're not." We both burst out laughing so hard. He was actually very handsome like dad, I was just teasing him.
"Nice one kid." Who would've thought we'd get along so well.
"You know Caleb I thought you were one of those annoying, ever-so-serious, arrogant businessmen dad always made fun of." He chuckled.
"That's harsh. Why would you think that?" He looked amused rather than hurt.
"When I first saw you, you just gave me a blank stare with no emotions. I couldn't really figure out what you're like. You didn't even smile or talk." He chuckled then faced me.
"I was worried. Well actually scared. I was scared you'd never accept me and hate me but grandpa was right he-"
"Grandpa? You have met him already?" He nodded.
"Yeah I met him a month after I met dad. He said I had to meet the man behind this wealth before officially being called a Davison." He explained.
"Oh." I said feeling disappointed that even my grandfather knew about Caleb yet I didn't.
"Yeah so that's why I masked my emotions when we met so you wouldn't tell when I'm hurt if you happen to hate me." I let out a huff.
"Hate is a very big word." He nodded.
"I know but I can be anxious too sometimes." I giggled at how someone like him could ever be anxious. "Hey do you like ice cream?" My smile grew wider every second.
"I love ice cream" he chuckled and stood up.
"Well let's go get some" I nodded then we went to his car.
...
"So no boyfriend?" I giggled shaking my head.
"Never even had one" he gasped.
"Are you being serious?" I nodded and finished my chocolate chip ice cream.
"I don't know about you but being an only child made me a loner. The fact that I'm also a billionaire's child made it worse. First of all no neighbors so you can say I didn't get to experience the normal childhood even though mom and dad tried to give me a normal one but still dating wasn't something that came easy for me like most girls." He nodded in understanding.
"So you're more of...." My attention shifted to a very familiar voice I could hear from a distant. I looked over the direction of the voice in the quiet hotel restaurant and I spotted her.
"Aunt Cam I'm telling you, you'll love them immediately you see them." uh oh.
Meg
"Shit" I cursed under my breath trying not to look at her hoping she doesn't see me.
"What did you say?" I looked at a confused Caleb.
"Nothing uhm I actually was-"
"Wait is that?.......aunt Cam I'll be right back." I could hear footsteps coming closer. Oh no! "Kyla?" She was finally next to me.
"Do you know her?" Caleb asked worriedly.
"Does she know me? Kyla I cannot believe you didn't tell me two know each other." Okay what do I say now? If I start explaining my relationship with Caleb she'll want to know about the non existing aunt.
"And why is she supposed to tell you that? Who the hell are you?" Say something before they argue!
"Meg! You look gorgeous." Caleb looked at me confused. Is that the best you could do? "Oh right my bad. Yes I know her Caleb, this is my best friend Megan Miller. Meg this is my older brother Caleb." She gasped while Caleb relaxed.
"Oh so this is your best friend? Nice to meet you Megan. I'm sorry if I was rude, I was making sure you're not harassing my little sister." He extended his hand and Meg shook it immediately.
"It's okay I understand and it's nice to meet you too Mr Davison." She looked at me "can I talk to you for a second?" I frowned and before I could say anything she dragged me to a corner.
"What the living hell Ky?!" My eyes widened at her reaction.
"Meg calm down I can explain." This will be interesting. Shut up!
"Of course you have some explaining to do Ky. Why didn't you tell me that, that God is your brother before I embarrassed myself in front of him?" God?
Ooookay not the question we were hoping for.
"God?" I looked at Caleb and he was looking at us. "Caleb? God of what?"
"Of looks obviously. Oh My Gosh he's even cuter in person." Wait what?
"Uhm did you say in person? You know him?" She giggled and nodded at the same time.
"Obviously duh. Who doesn't know Caleb Davison." Suddenly it was as if she realised something. "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF IT BEFORE?!"
"Can you keep it down?!" I hissed. "What do you mean think of it before?"
"That he's your brother. The one you were talking about, you both share the same last name so it had to be him you were talking about yesterday." I sighed.
"I didn't tell you the brother's name that's why you didn't put two and two together." She giggled a little.
"Oh right."
"Yeah. Meg I have to get back to Caleb now we'll talk later okay?" She nodded.
"Okay, I'll call you." I nodded and went back to the my brother. Caleb smiled as I sat and I did the same.
I think it's safe to say Meg has a crush on your brother.
What? No that's not true. Why do you say that?
I mean she said he is cute.
She wasn't lying though and besides she made it obvious he's well known so maybe he's everyone's crush. That explains the stares I've been getting ever since we walked in.
Okay that's true.
...
I walked to the study hoping to get a good book I haven't read before. There are a lot of amazing books here but I've read most of them.
"Uhm yes Mr Lopez I will attend your gala, I have already told your assistant I accept your invitation." I got in closing the door really slowly not making any noise. "Really? I didn't know Sir" I walked to the book shelf and started looking. I'm pretty sure Caleb doesn't even know I'm here. "It's okay I'll find myself a date no need to worry yourself about that." He chuckled. A date?
Eavesdropping?
Well he's pretty loud and clear so obviously I'll hear what he says. I rolled my eyes and continued to look.
"Goodbye sir. Hey." I looked at him behind me. "I'm sorry I was on the phone too long, do you need anything?"
"No I came to look for a book to read." He folded his arms and looked at me, more like eyeing me actually. "What?"
"Can you be my date?" What?
"I beg your pardon?"
"Well please sit first so I can explain." I put back the book I had taken then went to sit in front of the desk. "So there's this gala that's being held next Saturday night, to help fundraise for an orphanage. I was invited but I just found out I'm expected to come with a date. Old people can be so annoying sometimes but anyway point is you look like a potential candidate." I crooked my eyebrow.
"Potential candidate? Seriously?" He chuckled a little.
"No not like that. I'm just not up for calling my assistant to set me up with some random power hungry girl."
"Okay so where is your girl?"
The question kind of came as a shock to him, he was really taken aback by it. He rubbed his face then leaned on the desk.
"She's out of the country." Oh so he really does have a girl.
"She could still fly here there's still time or what, she's too busy?" What could be his girlfriend be doing? I never took him as the long distance guy.
"She uhm.....she's a.......well yeah she's a little busy at the moment." He started sorting some documents that were lying on the desk.
"With what?"
"Huh?"
"She's busy with what?" He gulped. He's looking really nervous if you ask me. Why would he be nervous?
"Uhm.....acting yeah she's an actress. Still not well known but she got this huge opportunity so she's busy with that at the moment."
"Wow that's great news. Congratulations to her. Well in that case I'll stand in for her." His brownish yellowish eyes lit up. "On one condition though."
"Anything Kyla."
"You will not leave me by myself because I know nothing about those people and how to even start a conversation with them. We're talking about well known millionaires here. Who knows what they like talking about besides money?" He chuckled then nodded.
"Well some are billionaires like us but I promise I won't leave you. You're under age anyway so I'm supposed to guard you at all times." I rolled my eyes playfully at him.
"You don't have to rub it in my face you know." He chuckled.
"Okay I'm sorry but thank you so much for agreeing to be my date I owe you one okay? We'll go dress shopping on Wednesday."
"Okay but that'll have to be afternoon because I'm still a student for the next two weeks."
"Right I'll make an appointment for 4pm is that okay?"
"Perfect. Oh and pick me up from school I get out at 3pm" I jumped off the chair.
"I won't be late." He gave me a curt nod and with that I left to my room.
