Chapter 3 Three

Chapter 3 Three

"Good morning, Evelina," Greta called out, offering her a warm smile as she kneaded a massive mound of dough.

"Good morning, Greta," Evelina replied, returning the elder wolf's smile with genuine affection.

As she set about preparing the alpha's breakfast tray, a familiar figure entered the kitchen, his presence instantly commanding the attention of everyone in the room.

"Jaxon," Evelina acknowledged, her voice steady despite the flutter of unease in her chest.

Jaxon regarded her with a cool indifference, his gaze roaming over her with a mixture of disdain and something else, something Evelina couldn't quite place.

"The alpha will be expecting his breakfast shortly," he said, his tone clipped and businesslike.

Evelina nodded, her hands moving with practiced efficiency as she plated the steaming eggs and crispy bacon. Just as she was about to pick up the tray, the kitchen door burst open, and Morgana Voss strutted in, her lips curled into a cruel smirk.

"Well, well, look who's up and about bright and early," Morgana taunted, her eyes glinting with malice. "Tell me, Evelina, do you enjoy being the pack's little servant girl?"

Evelina took a deep breath, steeling herself against Morgana's barbs. "I serve the pack with pride and loyalty, Morgana," she replied, her voice steady and unwavering.

Morgana let out a mocking laugh, her gaze sweeping over Evelina with disdain. "Pride? Loyalty? Don't make me laugh. You're nothing but a pathetic little pup, barely worthy of the air you breathe."

A hush fell over the kitchen as the other pack members watched the confrontation unfold, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. Evelina could feel their stares boring into her, waiting for her to crumble under the weight of Morgana's cruelty.

But this time, Evelina refused to back down. She squared her shoulders and met Morgana's gaze head-on, her eyes blazing with a newfound determination.

"You can mock me all you want, Morgana," she said, her voice ringing with conviction. "But my loyalty to this pack is stronger than your petty insults."

A ripple of surprise swept through the onlookers, and Morgana's expression faltered for a brief moment. But then, her lips curled into a sardonic grin, and she stepped closer, her eyes narrowing dangerously.

"We'll see how long that loyalty lasts, Evelina," she hissed, her voice laced with venom. "Mark my words, you'll get what's coming to you, and when you do, no one will be there to save you."

With a final, contemptuous glance, Morgana turned on her heel and stormed out of the kitchen, leaving a tense silence in her wake. Evelina could feel the weight of the pack's stares, but this time, she held her head high, refusing to let Morgana's threats diminish her resolve.

Greta approached her, her eyes shining with a mixture of pride and concern. "You handled yourself well, child," she murmured, placing a comforting hand on Evelina's shoulder. "But be careful. Morgana's words carry a weight you shouldn't take lightly."

Evelina nodded, her heart still pounding from the confrontation. "I will, Greta," she assured the elder wolf. "But I won't let her threats deter me from my duty."

With a resolute nod, Evelina lifted the breakfast tray and made her way to the alpha's quarters, her steps purposeful and her spirit undaunted. As she approached the alpha's chambers, a sense of foreboding settled over her, but she pushed it aside, focusing instead on the task at hand.

Knocking on the heavy wooden door, Evelina waited for the alpha's gruff summons before entering. The alpha sat at his desk, his massive form imposing and his gaze sharp as he studied her approach.

"Your breakfast, Alpha," Evelina said, setting the tray down on the desk with steady hands.

The alpha grunted in acknowledgment, his eyes narrowing as he regarded her. "You seem... different this morning, Evelina," he remarked, his voice rumbling like distant thunder.

Evelina met his gaze squarely, her resolve unwavering. "I've simply decided not to let the whispers and taunts of others break my spirit, Alpha," she replied, her voice ringing with conviction.

The alpha studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he nodded, a flicker of approval in his eyes.

"Good," he said, reaching for a steaming mug of tea. "The pack needs wolves with your kind of strength and loyalty."

Evelina's heart swelled with pride at the alpha's words, a warmth spreading through her chest. But just as she was about to respond, the alpha let out a strangled cough, his massive form convulsing violently.

"Alpha!" Evelina cried, rushing to his side as he clutched at his throat, his eyes bulging with panic.

The alpha's gaze locked onto hers, his expression one of pure terror as he gasped for air. Evelina watched in horror as his body went rigid, and then, with a final, wheezing breath, he slumped forward, his head striking the desk with a sickening thud.

Silence descended over the chamber, heavy and suffocating, as Evelina stared at the alpha's motionless form, her mind reeling with shock and disbelief. It was only when she saw the thin trickle of blood oozing from the corner of the alpha's mouth that the reality of the situation hit her with full force.

The alpha was dead.

A scream tore from Evelina's lips, echoing through the chamber and shattering the eerie silence. Within moments, the door burst open, and a group of pack members rushed in, their eyes wide with alarm.

"What happened?" one of them demanded, his gaze darting between Evelina and the alpha's lifeless body.

Evelina opened her mouth to respond, but the words wouldn't come. Her mind was a whirlwind of confusion and fear, and all she could do was stare at the alpha's body, her heart pounding in her ears.

"She... she poisoned him!"

The accusation rang out like a thunderclap, and Evelina whirled around to see Morgana standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with feigned shock.

"Poisoned?" another pack member echoed, their gaze turning to Evelina with suspicion.

"Yes!" Morgana cried, her voice dripping with false outrage. "I saw her slipping something into his tea!"

Evelina's breath caught in her throat as the pack members closed in around her, their expressions ranging from disbelief to outright hostility.

"No!" she protested, her voice trembling with desperation. "I would never... I'm loyal to the pack!"

But her words fell on deaf ears as the pack members advanced, their eyes filled with accusation and fury.

"Liar!" one of them snarled, baring their fangs at her. "You'll pay for this treachery, Evelina!"

As they dragged her away, Evelina caught sight of Morgana's triumphant smirk, her eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. In that moment, Evelina knew the truth – Morgana had set her up, and now she was trapped in a nightmare of her own making.
