Chapter 2 Two

Chapter 2 Two

The days that followed Jaxon's public rejection were a blur of pain and humiliation for Evelina. No matter where she went within the pack's territory, whispers and sideways glances followed her like a relentless shadow. The once-respected wolf had become a pariah, the subject of mockery and scorn.

Despite the anguish that threatened to consume her, Evelina refused to let it break her spirit. She threw herself into her duties with renewed vigor, determined to prove her worth through unwavering loyalty and dedication to the pack.

Early one morning, as the first rays of sunlight peeked over the horizon, Evelina made her way to the communal kitchen. The familiar scents of simmering broth and freshly baked bread filled the air, a comforting reminder of the simple joys that still remained.

"Good morning, Evelina," a warm voice greeted her. Evelina turned to see Greta, one of the pack's elder wolves, offering her a kind smile.

"Good morning, Greta," Evelina replied, returning the smile with a warmth she hadn't felt in days.

"Don't mind those gossiping fools," Greta said, her eyes twinkling with wisdom. "They don't know the first thing about true strength."

Evelina felt a surge of gratitude toward the elder wolf, her words a balm to her wounded spirit. "Thank you, Greta. Your kindness means more than you know."

As Evelina began preparing the alpha's breakfast tray, the kitchen door swung open, and a familiar figure strode in. Jaxon. Evelina's heart clenched as their eyes met, the memory of his rejection still fresh and raw.

"Evelina," Jaxon said, his tone clipped and businesslike.

"Jaxon," she replied, doing her best to keep her voice steady.

"The alpha will be expecting his breakfast shortly," Jaxon continued, his gaze roaming over her with a mixture of disdain and something else, something Evelina couldn't quite place.

"Of course," Evelina replied, turning her attention back to the sizzling bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs. "It will be ready momentarily."

As she worked, she could feel Jaxon's eyes boring into her back, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. Greta shot Jaxon a disapproving glare, but he seemed oblivious to the elder wolf's reproach.

"Hurry it up, Evelina," Jaxon snapped, his impatience evident. "The alpha doesn't like to be kept waiting."

Evelina bit back a retort, her hands trembling ever so slightly as she plated the steaming breakfast. Just as she was about to pick up the tray, the kitchen door burst open, and Morgana Voss strutted in, her lips curled into a cruel smirk.

"Well, well, if it isn't the pack's favorite little servant girl," Morgana taunted, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Still scraping and bowing for the alpha, I see."

Evelina's jaw clenched, but she refused to rise to the bait. She lifted the tray and turned to leave, but Morgana stepped into her path, blocking her way.

"Move, Morgana," Evelina warned, her voice low and laced with a determination she didn't quite feel.

"Or what?" Morgana sneered, her gaze challenging. "You'll bark at me like the pathetic little puppy you are?"

A hush fell over the kitchen as the other pack members watched the confrontation unfold. Evelina could feel their eyes on her, judging, waiting for her to crumble under the weight of Morgana's cruelty.

But Evelina refused to give them the satisfaction. With a deep breath, she squared her shoulders and met Morgana's gaze head-on.

"I won't stoop to your level, Morgana," she said, her voice steady and unwavering. "Now, move aside before I'm forced to make you."

A ripple of surprise swept through the onlookers, and for a brief moment, Morgana's smug expression faltered. But then, her lips curled into a sardonic grin, and she stepped aside, her eyes gleaming with a newfound respect – or was it fear?

"Well, well, it seems the little pup has finally grown some teeth," Morgana murmured, her voice laced with grudging admiration.

Evelina didn't spare her another glance. With her head held high, she strode out of the kitchen, the weight of the tray in her hands a constant reminder of her purpose, her reason for enduring the cruelty of those around her.

As she made her way to the alpha's quarters, a sense of determination settled over her like a comforting cloak. She would not let the whispers and taunts break her. She was Evelina Wren, and she would prove her worth to the pack, no matter the cost.

Reaching the alpha's chambers, Evelina took a deep breath and knocked on the heavy wooden door. A gruff voice called out, bidding her to enter, and she pushed open the door, steeling herself for the encounter to come.

The alpha, a massive wolf with a grizzled muzzle and piercing eyes, sat at his desk, his gaze instantly zeroing in on Evelina. She fought back the urge to cower under his intense scrutiny, instead focusing on maintaining her composure.

"Your breakfast, Alpha," she said, setting the tray down on the desk with steady hands.

The alpha grunted in acknowledgment, his eyes narrowing as he studied her. "I've heard whispers about you, Evelina," he rumbled, his voice deep and resonant.

Evelina's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her expression carefully neutral. "Whispers, Alpha?"

"About your... situation with Jaxon," the alpha clarified, his gaze sharpening. "It seems your mate has grown tired of your weakness."

Evelina flinched, the words striking a chord deep within her. But she refused to let the alpha see her pain.

"With all due respect, Alpha," she said, her voice unwavering, "my personal affairs have no bearing on my loyalty to this pack."

The alpha regarded her for a long moment, his eyes searching hers for any sign of falsehood. Finally, he gave a curt nod, his expression unreadable.

"See that it remains that way, Evelina," he warned, his tone brooking no argument. "I won't tolerate any distractions or weakness from my pack members."

"Of course, Alpha," Evelina replied, lowering her head in a respectful gesture. "You have my word."

As she turned to leave, the alpha's voice stopped her in her tracks.

"One more thing, Evelina," he said, his tone oddly contemplative. "Don't let them break you. The pack needs your strength, now more than ever."
