Aria felt as if the ground had opened up beneath her feet, sending her tumbling into a dark, bottomless abyss. Ryker Thorne's words echoed through her mind, their meaning too staggering to fully comprehend.
Her mate. Her Alpha. Her King.
Trembling, she could only gaze up at him, drinking in the rugged angles of his face, the intensity blazing in those amber eyes. This male exuded power and dominance with every molecule of his being—he was a ruler, a conqueror, a force of nature unto himself.
And he claimed her as his mate.
"I...I don't understand," she finally whispered, hating how frail her voice sounded. "How can you be my mate? We've never met, never..."
"Never felt the exquisite burn of our bond flaring to life?" Ryker finished for her, his lips quirking in a ghost of a smile. He slowly reached out, calloused fingertips tracing the delicate line of her jaw in a possessive caress. "I assure you, we are fated, little one. From the moment I caught your scent on the wind, I knew you were mine."
Aria shivered at his heated touch, at the undisguised hunger smoldering in those molten depths. Part of her recognized the dizzying pull of their connection, an instinctive yearning to surrender to this alpha's dominion. But the larger part recoiled, fear and distrust warring with that primal craving.
"I can't..." she rasped, shrinking away from his intense regard. "You don't understand what I've been through. What they..." Her gaze skittered to where Kieran had slunk away, shame rendering her momentarily mute.
Ryker's expression tightened, his eyes narrowing to blazing slits of amber fury. "The pup dared to mistreat what is mine?" he bit out in a voice made of steel and gravel. "He will be made to pay for such insolence."
"No!" Aria gasped, panicked. She couldn't bear the thought of more violence and bloodshed because of her. "Please, I want no part of this conflict. I've endured enough at their hands."
Her arms curled defensively around her swollen belly, shielding her unborn pup from any potential threats -- including this intense, charismatic alpha who had inadvertently sparked within her a yearning she dared not name.
"I can't stay here," she whispered, tears shimmering in her eyes. "Not with you, or Kieran, or any of them. I need...I need to get away. To keep my pup safe." She swallowed hard, steeling her courage to meet his blazing stare. "From everyone."
A muscle ticked in Ryker's chiseled jaw, but he gave a slow, regal nod of acquiescence. "Very well, little mate. I will not force my claim upon you..." His gaze drifted pointedly to her rounded belly, his striking features tightening. "For now. But make no mistake -- you are mine, and I will not rest until you are by my side where you belong. With our pup, our heir, nestled safely in the heart of my kingdom."
Aria's breath hitched at the sheer possessiveness in his tone, the undisguised promise lurking beneath the words. This alpha would pursue her, hunt her to the ends of the earth if need be. Of that, she had no doubt.
And somewhere, deep within the frayed tattered remnants of her soul, a tiny spark of anticipation flickered to life at the prospect.
But fear doused that spark as quickly as it kindled. Fear of Ryker's possession, of the shadows pursuing her from her former pack, of her own doubts and insecurities. So she did the only thing she could think of -- she fled.
Gathering what little strength remained, Aria pushed herself to her feet and ran, disappearing into the comforting shroud of night's ebony embrace. Away from the kingdom, away from Ryker and his heated promises...and away from the truth that burned brighter with every rasping breath:
Part of her wished to surrender, to cease her running and allow this alpha to claim what he insisted was rightfully his.
But the rest, shaped and hardened by years of suffering and torment, knew better than to fall for the honeyed words of one such as he.
Even if, in her secret heart of hearts, she longed for nothing more.
Aria ran until her lungs burned and her legs trembled with exhaustion. Only when the first pale streaks of dawn began to crest the horizon did she finally stumble to a halt, bracing herself against the gnarled trunk of an ancient oak.
Harsh, ragged sobs tore from her throat as the events of the night cascaded over her in a dizzying rush. Ryker's appearance, his bold declarations, the searing promise in those scorching amber eyes -- it was all too much, too overwhelming for her fractures psyche to process.
Sinking to the leaf-strewn ground, she curled in on herself, cradling her swollen belly with trembling arms. "What am I to do?" she whispered brokenly to the silent forest. "Where can I go when it feels as though the very earth has opened to swallow me whole?"
As if in response, a faint flutter rippled within her womb, a stark reminder of the innocent life sheltered there. The life she had fled to protect, only to find herself ensnared by a new, infinitely more complicated threat.
Ryker's words echoed through her mind, branding themselves onto her very soul:
Mine. Mate. My heir.
Could she dare to believe such fanciful claims? Or were they merely the pretty lies of an alpha intoxicated by her burgeoning condition and the fertile promise she represented?
But even as those doubts swirled, something deeper and far more elemental stirred to wakefulness inside her -- a primal yearning to answer the call of her chosen mate, to surrender to his strength and allow him to shelter her within the protective circle of his embrace.
The reality was, regardless of his impassioned vows, Aria held no illusions about the difficulties that lay ahead. Ryker had set his sights upon her, declared his intentions with a confidence that bordered on arrogance. He would not let her go easily, of that she was certain.
Which meant her path was clear, even if it twisted through the heart of untold perils. She would flee this kingdom and all it represented -- Ryker's oath be damned. Flee and go to ground, concealing herself and her pup until she could discern the truth of the alpha's words and decide if his claim was one she could, in good conscience, accept.
The decision made, Aria pushed herself to her feet, squaring her slender shoulders with grim determination. She was no weak, helpless thing to be cowed by the weight of her circumstances. She was stronger than that, forged from crackling flames of defiance that had flickered in her soul since that long-ago day when her world first shattered around her.
Let Ryker Thorne make his noble promises and chase her to the ends of the earth. She would endure, escape his heated pursuit, and live to fight another day -- for herself, for her pup.
