Chapter 3 Three

Chapter 3 Three

The weeks that followed passed in a blur for Aria. Her once-slender form began to swell with the undeniable signs of her condition—a fait accompli that filled her with both wonder and trepidation. She was nurturing new life, conceived from a single night of reckless passion. A child that, by all rights, should have been a blessing.

Yet Aria found herself dwelling in the shadows, avoiding the disdainful glares and cruel whispers that now followed her wherever she went. Word of her indiscretion had spread like wildfire through the pack, cementing her status as an outcast and pariah.

"Well, well, if it isn't the little wolf-whore."

Aria froze at the mocking drawl, her shoulders tensing. Slowly, she turned to face the sneering voice's owner—Selena, one of the few she had once been able to call a friend.

The blonde's lip curled with undisguised disgust as she boldly eyed Aria's burgeoning belly. "I always knew you were nothing but a desperate, mewling cur. But to whore yourself out and bring that...that thing into our pack?" She spat at Aria's feet, her beautiful features twisted with loathing. "You're a disgrace, Aria Voss. Just like your wretched parents."

The words lashed across Aria's soul like a barbed whip. She flinched, her arms curling protectively around her midsection as if to shield the innocent life growing within.

"I didn't ask for this," she whispered, hating the tremor in her voice. "I never wanted—"

"Save your pathetic excuses, you filthy sow," Selena snarled. "Thanks to your wanton ways, you've brought nothing but shame upon us all. You're lucky the alphas allow you to keep breathing at all."

With that parting shot, the blonde whirled away, tossing her mane of golden curls in a gesture of utter contempt. Aria could only stand there, stunned and shaken to her core, as the cruel words echoed through her mind like a haunting refrain.

As the moons continued their inexorable cycle, Aria's condition became impossible to hide. The judgmental stares, the muttered insults—they all intensified, a relentless assault that chipped away at her defenses until she was a mere shadow of herself.

It finally came to a head one crisp autumn night, when Aria found herself cornered by none other than her erstwhile mate, Kieran Steele. The powerful alpha stalked toward her, his eyes blazing like twin emerald infernos.

"Look at you," he growled, his lip curling in disgust as he eyed the swell of her belly. "Swollen and bloated like a beast in rut. Rutting yourself out to any warm body that would have you."

Aria shrank back, terror spiking through her veins. "Kieran, please...I never meant—"

"Never meant for what?" he snarled, advancing until his powerful frame towered over her. "To dishonor me? To humiliate me in front of the entire pack by spreading your legs for a rutting stranger?"

His hand shot out, calloused fingers clamping around her throat as he yanked her flush against his body. Aria gasped, clawing at his iron grip as his free hand splayed possessively over her stomach.

"This bastard spawn you carry?" he hissed, his thumb caressing her taut flesh with mocking tenderness. "It's mine, Aria. Born of my seed, even if not from my loins. And you'll raise it under my watchful eye to atone for the depravity of its conception."

Aria could only whimper in fear and despair as Kieran's words washed over her. Bound to her tormentor, forced to raise her child in the twisted shadow of his control—it was a horrifying prospect, a fate worse than anything she could have imagined.

As his grip tightened, his eyes burning with sadistic glee, she knew her choices had dwindled to one:

Stay, and condemn herself and her unborn pup to a life of subjugation and misery at the hands of this monster.

Or escape, fleeing into the unknown with nothing but the tattered remnants of her pride—and the fragile life sheltered within her womb.

Aria's world tilted perilously as Kieran's grasp constricted, his fingers like a vise around her slender throat. Black spots danced before her eyes, her lungs burning with the desperate need for air.

Just when she thought the darkness would claim her, a deep, rumbling growl shattered the night—a sound so laden with feral power that even Kieran froze.

"Release her," a commanding voice snarled. "Now."

Kieran whirled, his hold on Aria loosening just enough for her to drag in a ragged breath. Through the haze of tears and dizziness, she glimpsed a towering figure emerging from the shadows.

Power rolled off him in waves, his broad-shouldered frame radiating an aura of dominance that made even the arrogant Kieran falter. Aria's gaze was immediately drawn to his eyes—glittering shards of molten amber that seemed to blaze from within.

"You dare challenge me?" Kieran blustered, though his usual bravado rang hollow. "I'll teach you to mind your place, rogue—"

His words choked off in a strangled cry as the newcomer moved with inhuman swiftness, his powerful hand clamping around Kieran's throat and slamming him back against the nearest tree trunk.

"I said release her," the alpha growled, his lip curling in a savage snarl to reveal wicked fangs. "Before I tear out your throat and feed it to you."

Kieran's eyes bulged, his bravado crumbling under that implacable predatory gaze. With a whimper of submission, he released Aria, and she crumpled to the ground, gasping and trembling violently.

"P-Please..." she rasped, cradling her distended belly protectively. "Don't hurt my pup..."

Those blazing amber eyes sliced toward her, softening ever so slightly. "I mean you no harm, little one," the alpha stated in a gentler tone. "But your...situation requires intervention."

Hauling Kieran up by the throat until his feet dangled helplessly, he bared his fangs in a feral glare. "Make no mistake, pup—the female carries my heir, born of my bloodline. By the ancient laws, she is mine to claim as mate. Harm so much as a hair on her head, and I'll make you beg for a mercy I won't grant."

With a disdainful flick of his wrist, he flung the gasping Kieran aside like a rag doll. The fallen alpha scrabbled away, his earlier arrogance replaced by naked terror.

Aria could only gape in stunned disbelief as the imposing stranger approached, his movements lithe and predatory. Up close, she could make out the powerful lines of his chiseled features, the blade of his nose and the sensual curve of his lips.

He knelt before her, one calloused hand cupping her cheek with an unexpectedly gentle caress. "I will keep you safe, my mate," he murmured, the low timbre of his voice sending an odd shiver down her spine. "Both you and my pup. This, I vow."

His heated gaze roamed over her face, seeming to take in every delicate detail as if committing her features to memory. Then, with a slow, wolfish smile curling those sensual lips, he uttered the words that would change her life forever:

"Hello, Aria. I'm Ryker Thorne—your Alpha...your mate...your King."
