“No, it’s okay,” she said, raising her eyes to him that time and putting on a brave smile that he didn’t believe for a minute. “I’m not expecting anything beyond this weekend.”

What could he say to that? Everything she said had been true, and he couldn’t even offer her an alternative because he had nothing. As soon as they went back to Hope Springs, they would be under the microscope of the small town, not to mention her brother. He couldn’t even tell her it was different with her, that she was different, because it didn’t matter, not even if it was true. It didn’t matter...
