A month later, I returned to New York from Seattle and headed straight for the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Jon was already waiting. "You're right on time."
I scoffed and shot a glance at Caroline, standing by his side.
"Well, well, Jon, bringing your little mistress to our divorce. Are you in a rush to get remarried? When's the wedding? Should I send a grand gift?"
Jon frowned. "Don't talk nonsense. Caroline isn't feeling well today, so I thought I'd take her to the hospital."
I sneered. "Then by all means, take your little mistress to the hospital first and come back later. I've got plenty of time and I don't have to aggravate you guys so much."
Jon reached out to grab my arm. "Enough, let's get this over with. I don't have time to argue."
A wave of anger surged within me, and I yanked my arm free. "What's this, Jon? Suddenly you want face now? Why didn't I see you want face before?"
At that moment, Caroline rushed forward, crying, "Stop arguing, please."
I felt a wave of disgust rise in my throat. "Jon, if you had any decency, you wouldn't have brought her here today. But since you insist on disgusting me, I'm not going in. You can either knock me out and drag me in, or we're not getting divorced! Let's see who lasts longer."
Jon's face turned red with fury. He yanked Caroline and stormed off, throwing me a final glare before leaving.
I smirked, even more irritated now. Turning on my heel, I left the bureau as well. I immediately called a locksmith and took a cab straight to Caroline's apartment complex.
At the sporting goods store near the entrance, I bought a golf club and then headed up with the locksmith.
Once I called over the property management, I pulled out my marriage certificate and shoved it in their faces. "Look carefully. This is my marriage certificate with Jon. This is his apartment, correct?"
The property manager nodded.
With a smile, I turned to the locksmith. "You heard that? Go ahead and unlock the door. This is joint marital property. I'm his wife, and I have every right to handle it."
The locksmith quickly unlocked the door. After I sent them all away, I raised the golf club and smashed everything in sight.
Looking around at the endless photos of Jon and Caroline, I snorted. They really did love taking pictures together, didn't they?
Even though Jon wasn't smiling in a single one of them, it still made me furious.
After we graduated from college, we both threw ourselves into starting a business. We were always so busy. Eventually, as the business stabilized, Jon only became busier.
When I decided I wanted to prepare for pregnancy, I temporarily stepped away from the company.
But little by little, Jon and I from nothing to say, and then to a week are rare to see once, until the separation, and then I watched as he brought different women back to his place… That's when I finally realized there was no love left between us.
I smashed everything I could see, leaving the apartment in complete chaos.
But as I stared at the photo of Jon and Caroline, a wave of suffocation hit me.
How long had it been since Jon and I had taken a picture together?
I couldn't even remember.
Drip, drip. A few drops of blood splattered onto their photo. I wiped at my nose and, regaining my composure, turned around—only to meet Jon and Caroline standing in the doorway.
Caroline's face was full of shock, and Jon's was filled with anger.
I, on the other hand, smiled.
