Chapter 1

Chapter 1

I called Jon. "I agree, let's get a divorce. Come back and sign the papers."

Jon sneered. "Rachel, Are you trying to pull another stunt? I don't have time for this!"

He hung up immediately.

Of course. I had said the same thing countless times before, always just trying to get him to come home.

He wouldn't believe me anymore.

I waited a few days, but Jon still didn't return.

Staring at the report that had sealed my fate, I decided I couldn't waste any more time on him. I went to find him myself.

It wasn't hard to find Jon. I went straight to that familiar neighborhood and headed straight for his place.

Bang, bang, bang!

I pounded on the door, and a soft-spoken woman opened it quickly.

"President Rachel, I…"

Fear filled her eyes, as if she thought I would tear her apart on the spot.

I snapped, "Tell your precious Jon I've agreed to the divorce. Rest assured, you'll soon be able to marry him and be Mrs. Dowson without a hitch."

Her eyes reddened. "President Rachel, I didn't mean to… I'm just—"

I waved her off, cutting her short. "Enough with the excuses. Go tell Jon that if he doesn't come back, I'll take you both to court and sell the house! Did you hear me?"

I didn't bother to wait for a reply and walked away.

By tonight, I should see Jon. After all, he loves Caroline more than anything.

There's no way he'll let me provoke her like that.

Sure enough, after dinner, Jon came storming in.

Fuming, he demanded, "What the hell do you want, Rachel? I've told you a thousand times—stop bothering Caroline! There's nothing between us anymore, and it has nothing to do with her!"

I sat calmly on the couch, holding a glass of whiskey. The alcohol helped ease the pain in my body, if only for a little while.

"What did I do wrong? I'm still your legal wife, and that's our house. What's wrong with me visiting our house?"

Jon's face flushed with anger, but he was helpless. "Rachel, what's the point of this? Caroline has never tried to compete with you. Don't you know what respect is?"

Smash!

I smashed the glass at Jon's feet. "Respect? You're talking to me about respect, Jon? Do you even have any shame left? After all these years, have you ever respected me?"

It was laughable. He had been the one who disrespected me first, and now he wanted me to respect him?

Jon shouted in frustration, "What do you want from me? You grew up an orphan, used to being alone, and now you want everyone else to end up like you—a lonely, unwanted orphan?"

"I love Caroline. Stop making things difficult! No matter what, I'm divorcing you!"

I stood up and slapped him hard across the face. The sharp sound echoed as Jon's cheek swelled.

I said coldly, "Fine, just like you wanted. We'll sign the papers tonight. Don't wait any longer—I don't want to see you again."

"Are you satisfied now?"

Jon froze for a moment. I turned around and pulled out the divorce agreement I had prepared in advance. "Sign it."

Jon looked at me with suspicion, then at the agreement.

I sat back down, studying his face—even after the slap, he still looked handsome, refined as ever.

Tsk, life is unfair. Some people can be as black as pitch on the inside, yet still possess a face as angelic as his. A decade has passed, and it hasn't changed a bit. They'll likely live forever.

After reading the document, Jon eyed me warily. "What are you planning now?"

I said calmly, "It's all clearly written in the agreement. I only want this house. Nothing else."

Jon didn't believe me for a second. "You expect me to believe that? Our assets are worth billions, and you're just going to walk away?"

I smiled bitterly. Yes, we had built this life together, worked hard for what we had, but everything had changed.

I was tired. I didn't have the energy to argue anymore.

"Think whatever you want. This is my only request."

This house was the first one we bought together. It wasn't worth much anymore, but I still couldn't bear to see someone else living in it.

The thought of him marrying someone else and bringing another woman here made me sick.

Besides, when I sold it, at least I could get myself a decent plot. Coming into this world with nothing, leaving with nothing—it was almost freeing.

Jon kept flipping through the agreement. "I'll give you an extra billion. Once the lawyers draw it up, they'll send it to you."

I laughed sarcastically. "You are truly generous."

Jon pressed his lips together. "We've been married for years. I still want you to live well."

I scoffed. "No need. As long as you divorce me, I'll live just fine."

We had tormented each other for long enough.

Jon didn't say much more. He grabbed the agreement and walked out. But as he opened the door, he turned back and said, "You shouldn't live in New York anymore. Too many people know us here."

I gave him one word: "Leave."

When I heard the door close, my heart felt like it was being stabbed by a thousand knives.
