With her eyes closed, Bella felt uneasy. Her senses told her that Daniel was getting closer.
So close that she could smell his good smell. It was cologne mixed with a faint smell of tobacco.
But just when she was so nervous that her mouth was dry and she didn't know what to do, Daniel snorted and chuckled.
He restored the distance between them, pinched the tip of her nose with his right hand, and said softly, "Open your eyes. I'm just kidding. See how scared you are. Where did you have the nerve to kiss me in front of the whole school at that time?"
Bella opened her eyes and saw a smile in his deep and embarrassed face.
"Daniel, I'm really sorry about what happened five years ago. I was so mad that I went... To offend you."
Natalie warned her again and again in public not to hook up with Carl.
And Sabina was talking in her ear all the time, telling her that if she were her, she would pull a man a hundred times better than Carl in front of Natalie, strutting in front of her and saying, I don't care about him, just take him if you like.
And Bella just did that.
And this innocent passer-by was Daniel. He was pulled over by her. She said nothing and tiptoe kissed him.
Daniel listened to her, and for some unknown reason, his face darkened for a moment. "You've apologized more than once," he said, sipping his lips. "Don't say it again. I thought nothing of it."
Bella looked at him blankly. She had a feeling that she heard anger in his words.
Before she could ask him, Daniel had withdrawn his hand from the door. A faint smile came over his chiseled face again. "I won't drink the tea," he said. “I got something to do. So I gotta go. Get ready tonight, and I'll come and pick you up in the morning."
"Pick me up? Pick me up for what?" Bella asked stupidly.
"To the hotel, of course. Haven’t you just promised?"
Bella then realized. She began to refuse without thinking: "I think you are very busy, so don't come to pick me up. I’ll go by myself, really!"
But Daniel wouldn't listen to her. He pulled her away, opened the door and went out. Before closing the door, he added softly, "Get some rest. I'll pick you up tomorrow morning. Good night."
Then he closed the door and walked away, oblivious to the waves Bella had stirred up by his actions.
Bella looked at the door and gritted her teeth, feeling resentful.
Again, doing exactly what you want to do, with no regard for other people's feelings and how your actions will make them feel, Bella scolded him in her heart.
Just like when she was in South University, she thought that she was at least friends with Daniel, but he never told her about his going to Beijing.
And just like that, he was gone. She heard it from someone else that he had gone to Beijing at the behest of his grandfather.
Five years ago, he had gone, completely, as if he had never been in her life.
Bella's memories of her college days have languished. She didn't come to her senses until her cell phone rang.
Pick it up. It’s Sabina.
"Bella, I was absolutely right last time. Daniel, he is really the type I guess. If you don't believe me, go and check now."
"What are you talking about, Sabina?" she asked.
"Bella, you haven't read our forum of South University, go and read it!"
Bella took out the tablet computer with doubts and entered the forum of South University. When she saw the popular post, she froze, her eyes widening in disbelief.
Sabina guessed Bella had seen it, and then added triumphantly, "Bella, see? I told you Daniel had a crush on that playboy Henry."
An unknown trumpet suddenly appeared on the forum of South University, revealing that Daniel, president of Group Brook, loved Henry, his brother who had grown up together for many years.
And there are pictures. The photo was a little blurry, but it was enough to tell Bella that it was Daniel!
Sabina kept on babbling, "But maybe Henry is just a facade, for other people to see."
"But you met Daniel and Henry when you were in the student council. Didn't you find out anything about them?"
Bella looked at the photo, zoomed in and released it, then felt a flash of frustration.
This frustration. She did not know where it came from.
She put the tablet computer down and replied in a muffled voice, "I saw Daniel today."
"What? You met Daniel? Why do you suddenly see each other?"
City A is not so small. She has never met someone in these five years, but when she one day suddenly mentioned someone, and then they met. That's a bit of a coincidence.
Bella truthfully said, "That’s a coincidence. He is now a big client of our company. He wanted to do an ad for the L Hotel, which is owned by Group Brook, and he approached us."
"What a coincidence," Sabina wondered. “Your company is not famous in City A, how could he find you so opportunely?"
Bella shrugged and replied casually, "Who knows? Maybe this is the evil fate of god."
Sabina laughed. "I don't know," she said. “But Bella, I have good news for you."
She paused and said, "It is said that Daniel's grandfather is seriously ill and his family is putting all kinds of pressure on him to get married. I heard he's also on a blind date. He must obey his family and marry a woman."
Bella raised her eyebrows unaccountably. "And? What does it matter to me?"
"What does it matter? Bella, haven't you figured it out yet?"
Bella's face was silent. "What should I react to?"
"Didn't you say you wanted to find someone who didn't want to get married and help each other? Isn't this the perfect opportunity that just came your way? You go to Daniel, and I promise you, he'll agree to a fake marriage!"
Sabina reckoned that's what Daniel wants from Bella right now.
Bella just remembered that. She was suddenly silent, as if her heart was stirring.
