I abandoned my food and grabbed the phone, sliding the answer button. “Yes, hello?”

My heart was racing so fast I thought it would explode in my chest. I suddenly lost all appetite.

Denise had stopped eating to pay attention as well. Worry and concern laced her features. 

“He just flatlined. I’m sorry.”

The phone fell from my grip. The next second was a blur. I opened my mouth and let out a loud screech, but it sounded far away to my ears. 

“What happened?”
