After finding a suitable kidney donor, I wanted to proceed with the surgery immediately, but my husband refused to come back to sign the consent form for the surgery.
“No, Jasmine is busy with her exams right now. I don’t have time to come back. We’ll talk about it after you’re done,” he said.
I was about to respond, but he hung up on me before I had a chance to speak. When I called him again, he yelled at me, “How can you be so selfish? If your surgery is delayed a few days, you won’t die, but Jasmine will miss this opportunity forever!”
That day, the doctor told me the kidney had already been given to someone else and I had no more chances.
The monitor’s alarms were deafening, but I could hear them less and less as my consciousness faded.
In my dazed state, all I could see was the doctor frantically trying to save me.
I had been married to Nelson for three years, and at first, we were very much in love.
But everything changed when his first love, Jasmine, came back into the picture. Whenever Jasmine needed anything, she would call Nelson, and he would rush to her without regard for the situation, even in the middle of the night. Nelson never refused Jasmine.
Whenever I tried to stop him, Nelson would immediately mock me, saying, “Raegan, Jasmine is the only person I know in this city. If she needs help, what’s wrong with me going to help her? How can you be so selfish?”
But now, I no longer cared how much he helped Jasmine, because I was already dead.
I was resuscitated all night, and when the doctor announced that the resuscitation had failed, my body was sent to the morgue.
However, my spirit lingered in this world, drawn by a powerful force to Nelson’s side.
He was now shopping with Jasmine.
Jasmine had changed into a new dress and looked at Nelson coyly, “Do I look good?”
Nelson nodded with a gentle smile, “Jasmine, you look beautiful in anything.”
I had seen that smile before, but since Jasmine came back, I had never seen it again. I followed them like a wandering spirit, watching them shop together as if they were a young couple.
Until the hospital called Nelson: “Are you a relative of Raegan?”
Nelson’s face immediately showed irritation, “What is that woman up to now? I have other matters to attend to. Tell her if she causes any more trouble, I’ll divorce her!”
I followed behind, Nelson’s words no longer stirred any emotions within me. From the moment I died, I had truly been freed from this marriage.
“No, it’s not that. Mrs. Raegan passed away last night despite resuscitation efforts. Please have the family come to claim the body,” the hospital said.
Nelson was stunned. He had been on speakerphone, so Jasmine heard the call too.
She said, “You must be someone Sister Raegan sent to deceive us. I saw Raegan just a few days ago, and she seemed fine. How could she have died from failed resuscitation so soon?”
“Please tell Raegan’s sister that I will send Nelson back after I finish my surgery. Please don’t be angry with me. I’m alone in this city and unfamiliar with the surroundings, so I needed someone I knew to rely on.”
