As Nate got older, so did Elias. We had to teach Nate how to communicate with his brother. Elias’s surgery and hearing aids helped. Elias still spoke little, even though we took him to a speech therapist. The therapist said he would choose when to talk.

I stayed home with the boys until they attended school. Clarence understood and said I could return later. It was easier than leaving the boys with a sitter. It wasn’t easy when Elias’s temper flared, and he threw a toy at Nate. Nate threw one back. Then they fought. I played referee.

Matt came home to find the house a mess....
