Mom’s “talk” was an ambush. When I opened the door, expecting a casual visit, I found her standing there like a storm. Sofia was right behind her, her cheek still a little bruised as if she was trying to gain sympathy. “Olivia, apologize,” Mom demanded.

“No,” I shot back, blocking the doorway like a barrier. Dominic stood behind me, ready to support me. Sofia smirked at me.

“See? She’s violent,” she said, trying to sound cool.

“Violent?” Dominic scoffed. “You threatened her life.” That was the truth, and it hung in the air between us. Mom hesitated, but she chose to back Sofia.
