I made a mistake the moment I walked through those school gates. I knew it before I’d even made it halfway down the corridor, before the whispers started and the phones came out and the other parents pressed themselves against the walls like the walls might protect them from whatever they’d heard about me.
I knew it the way I always knew when I’d miscalculated something, a cold, precise recognition in the back of my mind that arrived a few seconds too late to be useful. The Ghost Lord had just walked his children to their classroom in broad daylight, in front of witnesses, in front of cameras....
