"Keep her waiting for the next two hours." That was the instruction Mrs. Wilson passed when the gateman asked the head of domestic staff to inform their boss of Flora's appointment.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. You'll have to stay out there until she returns in two hours' time. She left for an urgent meeting this morning."

The gateman stood from inside and related the information to her.
